Breaking News: Mahomes Mortal, Defense MIA – this was a heartbreaking loss — 19-to-13 — for Kansas City Chiefs fans to watch. Not only must we come to terms with the fact that the Chiefs defense is all but non-existent and that our offensive line could not protect Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes even if they had the entire arsenal of the United States military. We must also accept the fact that our own Magic Mahomes is a mere mortal, capable of making mistakes and falling victim to defenses that don’t know the meaning of quit as well as getting hurt. The Indianapolis Colts were that defense yesterday.
Sure the defense is better than they were last year, but they just aren’t good enough this year. Almost every game last year, and the four previous this year, they had no worries. Chances were that no matter how bad the defense performed last year, Mahomes and the offense would just jump in and pull their proverbial butts out of the ringer.
Alas, Mahomes was merely mortal last night, and the result was a Chiefs loss.
Even in one of his worst performances since becoming the Chiefs starting QB last season, Mahomes still threw for over 321 yards and a TD. He completed 22 of 39 passes and finished the evening with a 91.9% QB rating. The Colts sacked Mahomes four times and recorded eight quarterback hits.
They took their toll on our QB, and his play noticeably declined as the game painfully dragged on. We can only hope his gimpy ankle is minor and will be fine. I for one, will sleep with my fingers crossed tonight.
The ailing Mahomes received no help from the running game. Mecole Hardman, Mahomes, Anthony Sherman, and Damien Williams all combined for a whopping 36 yards on 14 carries.
The Colts offensive line had an absolute field day against our defensive line, pushing them all over the place, and converting fourth downs into first downs almost at will. The losses of Frank Clark and Chris Jones certainly did not help us either.
The two good things we can take from the game was the touchdown by Chiefs wide receiver Byron Pringle.
It was nice to see him come up big for a struggling Mahomes. Tyrann Mathieu also snagged a beautiful interception and returned it for thirty yards.
Despite those two bright spots, the Colts were the better team last night. They beat us in time of possession (37:15 compared to 22:45) and ran all over our defense, running the ball a staggering 45 times for 180 yards and one touchdown.
The penalties were also atrocious, but that’s fodder for another article (11 penalties for 125 yards). I try to stay positive, but this is one is tough. If the Chiefs don’t shore up our offensive line, and grow a pair on defense, we are in for a long season. Mahomes, no matter how magical he may be, cannot and should not be called on to save this team week in and week out. He is, after all, mortal. Amazing, yes, but still mortal.
