Brett Veach–Getting to: “Everything’s Up to Date in Kansas City”

Everybody, and all their buddies, are digging into the 2023 NFL Draft, which is now a scant few days away. It would be great if suck moves were done before the draft. I have started an article on the IOL and IDL, but I am putting that on hold for a moment.

The To-Do Very Soon List

Here’s what I think the To Do List is for Brett Veach, not necessarily before the draft, but most certainly to get done before Training camp. These items, if completed, would provide even more flexibility to Brett Veach and Co. before the draft, even if they are the only ones who know they plan to complete each item and plan it for the time between the Draft and camp.

1: Complete an extension for our IDL of Wonder, Chris Jones. No messing this one up, Brett!

2. Complete an extension for CB L’Jarius Sneed. He is the heart and soul of the CB room and covers outside or in the slot. Too valuable to let slide.

3. Re-Sign RB Jerick McKinnon.

He is too important for the offense to let him walk and he has proved it. We can use him in by using Spot Insertions early and keep him healthy for the stretch run. Figure out a way to trade Clyde Edwards-Helaire. He skipped the parade and had some clubhouse difficulties, along towards the end of the season. He has an “Availability problem” and could be a canker in the clubhouse this season. Get what you can and cut bait.

4. Fill out the IDL with another solid vet if Danny Shelton is earmarked as the 1-tech.

Then add a 3-tech to the IDL via Free agency if we must. I know we have Brian Cowart and Phil Hoskins for depth in the 3-Tech behind Turk Wharton. That may be good enough but recall in the first 3 or 4 games of 2020, the Chiefs lost 3 IDL players in the first four games. Of course, I hope the Chiefs get a draft pick added to the mix as well.

5. Bring back Carlos Dunlap-Edge Rusher.

I really love Dunlap and he loved the Chiefs.

Dunlap had a Chiefs pork-pie Hat and insisted he wear it in a DL group photo. He wouldn’t take it off. Here he is sporting the hat.

6. Try to sign (or trade for) a Top Drawer WR before Camp, and before the draft. Example? With OBJ signed (Whew!)…

This is my outrageous idea but I believe it is workable. Find a way to get DeAndre Hopkins aboard for at least 2 years. Hopkins is only 30, but he is in great physical shape. I can see him perform at top level for at least 3 more seasons. When he was with the Houston Texans (I live not far from Houston), I admired his body of work, and he will get open in the most drastic times. D’Hop is going to be available for a lot less money than the Cards want.

Chris Jones is going to encourage it in an upcoming Fishing tourney (today) and try to recruit D’Hop. Jump start this effort and Hopkins maybe signs to a 3–4-year deal with a built-in void year(s). Give him a prorated signing bonus each of the first 2 years with incentives. If it takes re-structuring contracts to do that… please. Hopkins is lightning in a bottle and would go a long way to getting the Chiefs to the Super Bowl over that 2-year period. That’s really my bottom line on the WR Group.
