Browns at Chiefs: PSG #3, OPEN THREAD

Laddie Morse

We finally get to celebrate the end of the preseason today with a game against the Cleveland Brown at Arrowhead Stadium. Hallelujah for that! The biggest question on everyone’s mind is: when will DT Chris Jones return to the team? Since we don’t have the foggiest — even though he’s stated he’ll sit out through the 8th game of the year — it does give others a chance to eb evaluated. Guys like, Tershawn Wharton (we hope he’s back today) and Danny Shelton (who’s lost 12 pounds this offseason and is looking ripe) or rookie Keondre Coburn.

In an article written by Luke Lindholm for SportsIllustrated.com has says:

.

“Both head coaches have suggested that we’ll get at least a brief look at their starters, which means a fascinating battle between Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson early in the first quarter…. The Browns are set to give their starters more of a run this week, and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is never shy to give his stars a taste of the preseason action either.”

.

This will be the Browns fourth preseason game because they played in the Hall of Fame game on August 3rd.. The Browns came away with a victory in that game but are currently 1-and-1-and-1 in preseason play having lost to the Commanders and they then tied the Eagles. So far, the Browns starting QB Deshaun Watson is 3/3 for 12 yards so it looks like their HC, Kevin Stefanski, will want to get a much better — longer — look at his QB.

John Dillon of Chiefs Wire wrote a piece called, “6 players to watch in Chiefs’ preseason finale vs. Browns” which include:

.

QB Shane Buechele

DB Kahlef Hailassie

WR Justyn Ross

RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire

LB Cole Christiansen

OL Jason Godrick

.

Buechele because he could end up edging out Blaine Gabbert as QB #2 and Kahlef Hailassie because he’s played well enough in the preseason to earn a possible nod. Justyn Ross because he just might end up making this roster and the opposite is true for CEH. Cole Christiansen because he might bump his way onto the 53 man final cut and Jason Godrick, because John Dillon says this about him:

.

“Godrick was a wildcard for the Chiefs heading into training camp but has proven that he can hold his own during both of Kansas City’s exhibition matchups in August. He had never played organized football before the Chiefs’ preseason Week 1 game against the Saints and has shown exceptional proficiency as a blocker in limited action.”

I’m more interested in the first team and how they will perform vs the Browns first team players. The players who get reps on first team should tell us a lot about how the Chiefs intend to use them during the regular season.

I’m also interested in the following players who bring energy to the team and include:

.

DB Chamarri Conner

Felix Anudike-Uzomah

TEs not named Kelce

6 or 7 WRs

.

Conner because he should end up making the roster and getting significant snaps during the regular season. FAU because he was held out of OTAs but found himself learning a lot and coming on strong in Training Camp. With Jody Fortson going down with another injury and the Chiefs not carrying a FB, it has looked like and extra TE would be needed to help fill that role so it looks like the TEs will be fighting it out for an extra spot on the 53. Lastly, the wide receivers need to not only fill the void not only left by Kadarius Toney but with so many talented WRs on the roster right now, it will. beof great interest to see who gets to end up catching passes from the greatest QB ever.
