Can Chiefs Overcome the Loss of Derrick Johnson?
The true glue and centerpiece of the Kansas City Chiefs defense went down again with a left Achilles injury during the team’s great victory over the Oakland Raiders at Arrowhead Stadium last night. It’s a sad eye in the middle of the Chiefs joyful storm. Now the Chiefs must forge on without a difference maker on a defense that has already been riddled with injuries. The question is: can the Chiefs overcome the loss of Derrick Johnson?
The answer is: I don’t know.
While Bob Sutton’s bend but don’t break defense was on display again last night, there’s no question that is was his bend but don’t break defense that, once again, delivered that victory from the hands of defeat. Even after DJ was injured and hobbled from the field, this band-aid band of players trudged on with newcomer CB Terrance Mithcell delivering the final swat at a Derek Carr pass to secure the win. Just yesterday morning AO writer Frank Leggio called Terrance Mithcell a “career backup” but last night he looked like he could be more than that.
Our hearts and prayers go out to Derrick Johnson. On a bright note: NFL.com is reporting that Chiefs running back supreme, Jamaal Charles, is targeting a return by the time the playoffs roll around.
