CB’s 2018 Lazy Big Board: OL

Chiefs could pass on OL in the draft and have a solid group of starters. However, with the loss of Fulton in free agency, they‘d be wise not to. Mitch Morse only started 7 games last year and, despite not missing much time, other years, has dealt with a number of injuries. Chiefs could also be interested in a new starter at LG. Ehinger and Witzmann have both had quality flashes, but neither looks to have a dominant hold on the spot. With a relatively deep class, Chiefs should be able to add a quality depth piece on the OL, if not a starter.

Pick 54 OG/C Billy Price 6’4” 312lbs

Big strong man who did a lot of pulling from the C position. Good fit for Chiefs zone scheme, but possesses the strength and base to function in power blocking sets as well. Good anchor, alert and looks for work. Not quite as nasty as I would like him to be. Finishes his blocks, but doesn’t really look to bury guys. All around quality player, who could start immediately at C, and should be a fairly quick study at OG.

Pick 78 OL Martinas Rankin 6′5” 305lbs

College LT in the SEC with solid mobility and size. Rankin isn’t an ideal option at OT and should probably move to the interior of the OL, but he can play all 5 spots, if he’s needed. Would be a really nice versatile depth piece on the OL. Effort level, on tape, was not quite what I wanted to see. Seemed to relax as soon as he thought the play might be over. Not a cold blooded killer, technician only, who does his job well, but only as long as he has to. That said’ Rankin has solid talent and may have just been trying to avoid injury leading up to the draft. If Chiefs believe Heck can ride this kid till he tries harder, he could turn into a quality starter sooner than later.

Pick 86 OT/OG Will Richardson 6′6” 304lbs

Decent mover for his size. Can play RT or RG, might not be a fit for LG. Not sure if he’s quick enough to pull effectively. Really solid base and decent footwork. Significant character concerns with a DWI in 2015 and a more recent suspension. Richardson has a lot of talent, but Chiefs need to be confident that he’s got his life together if they plan on picking him. Best fit may be at OG, and could take an offseason to get his body where it needs to be for the interior, offers depth as a RT right away though.

Pick 122 OT/OG Tyrell Crosby 6‘5” 325lbs

Crosby isn’t a special athlete, or a great fit for the ZBS, but his size and strength offer value as a RT/RG type. If Chiefs want to run some power run game looks in the future, Crosby can generate a good push up front. Chiefs could take other players here that are more athletic, but, for the sake of the run game, I’d like to see them go after some bigger players, like Crosby.

Pick 124 OG Wyatt Teller 6′4” 301lbs

Teller’s 2016 tape was a lot more impressive than his 2017, but I love his potential. Great athlete, with no bad weight. Has the nasty you look for. Good fit for Chiefs’ scheme. Doesn’t offer a lot of position versatility, but should be able to play either OG spot. Projections on Teller vary, but if Chiefs can get him to play like he did a couple years ago, they’ll have a heck of a steal in the 4^th round.

Pick 196 OT Alex Cappa 6′7” 305lbs

There was a lot of hype about Cappa after the senior bowl, but that kinda died out with a pedestrian combine performance. Cappa didn’t show the kind of speed you need to play LT, but he’s a quality option at RT and could maybe learn to play LG. His length and attitude are great assets, but he’ll have to spend an off-season in an NFL weight program before you trust him on the field. Cappa is a project, but I think he’s worth a roster spot, and could surprise by becoming a quality starter in a couple years.

Pick 233 OT/OG Toby Weathersby 6′6” 292lbs

Weathersby is a decent on the move and has a great base to work from. Has good length to play on the edge. Probably not quick enough to play LT, but could man the right side and slide in to play guard. He’s a physical player who’s a good run blocker, but needs work on his pass blocking. Injuries dogged him at LSU and Chiefs would probably rather have him stay a quality backup than become an injury prone starter.

Pick 243 C/OG Tony Adams 6′2” 322lbs

Experienced in an outside zone rushing scheme, which is what Chiefs do best. Well built and good on the move. Quick feet, anchors well and rarely completely whiffs on a block. Arms are shorter than you’d like. Lack of size may force him into a C only role, though, as a depth player, I think he can play OG. Good scheme fit for Chiefs, but limited ceiling as a starter.

OL isn’t a pressing need for the Chiefs, but they seem to be putting all their eggs in the Mahomes Basket. That being the case, it would be wise to at least secure a replacement for Fulton, if not a new starting LG. My first choice would be Wyatt Teller. I think he’s going to be a great OG and he’s got the mentality you need to succeed in the NFL. I wouldn’t be upset if Chiefs took Billy Price in the 2^nd, but I think they can also roll with their existing group and be ok. Defense is definitely a bigger need.
