Between Patrick Mahomes, Chad Henne and Matt McGloin, QB is probably at the bottom of the Kansas City Chiefs wish list. This draft is an unusual one at QB. We could see five go in the 1st round… then not another picked until the 4th round. If I had to guess, I’d say K.C. passes up QB altogether in this draft but, should they decide to look for a 3rd string option, there are a few players of interest. So, let’s jump to the 3rd round.
Pick 122 QB — Luke Faulk — 6‘4” 225lbs
Faulk has the look of a QB who is a quality backup for good teams, or an average to below average starter for bad ones. Think 2013 Alex Smith, but without the mobility. He’s a good game manager, but his deep and mid range game aren’t great. Potential is there to be better and his OL was horrible in college, so he might look good enough to draw some trade offers, down the road.

Pick 124 QB — Mike White — 6′4” 225lbs
Big armed QB in need of development. Dealt with a ton of pressure in college and didn’t handle it very well. Needs to be more decisive, make better reads, and recognize blitzes. Not very mobile. White has shown big potential all along, there’s a chance, with a better supporting cast, for that potential to be realized. He’s a developmental player, but if Chiefs can mold him, a bit, he can be a quality backup, or a guy you flip for a better pick, later on.

Pick 196 QB — Kyle Lauletta — 6′3” 215lbs
Last year, I was too high on Nathan Peterman. Kyle Lauletta is this year’s version and I’m not falling for it again. Lauletta is a more polished product as a QB than many others in this class, but his lack of NFL arm strength will lead to him getting intercepted a lot if he has to start much. Lauletta’s football IQ and leadership though, make him an excellent candidate for career backup duties. Chiefs may have missed out on Chase Daniel in FA, but Lauletta has a chance to have a similar impact, for the Chiefs.

Pick 233/243 QB — Logan Woodside — 6′2” 201lbs
Smart, accurate, mobile player, but very undersized. Teams will be nervous about him taking many hits. Arm strength is average, to slightly below average. Doesn’t have a compact release. Woodside’s mobility isn’t as much of an asset as it could be, because you’re afraid to let him run much. He’s a leader and a competitor with fairly well honed instincts. Woodside is another candidate for the career backup role.

Chiefs could walk away from this draft without any new QBs, but I wouldn’t mind if they took a shot on Woodside. I think he’d be a positive addition to the locker room, and a more affordable backup, once Chad Henne moves on. If Chiefs are in a gambling mood, they could take Mike White, in hopes of turning him into trade bait, in the near future.
