Chiefs 2021 Roster Needs, Part 2: FB, TE, QB and RB

Chiefs 2021 Roster Needs, Part 2: FB, TE, QB and RB – If you think back to my first article on Roster Needs, I dealt with the Offensive Line but, that task took two articles. Now, further information, and digging, is now revealed and another article is already proposed and, “Coming Soon”… as they say. Today’s focus will be on these needs of the Kansas City Chiefs skill position players: Fullback, Tight End, Quarterback and Running Back.

.

For these position groups, a draft pick is not needed to win the AFC West — again. Nor will an addition from the draft ensure that the Chiefs return to the Super Bowl and win it all — again! There is at least a huge sentiment that whatever the Chiefs do in the draft needs to focus on the Offensive Line to protect Patrick Mahomes or add a LB to that crew to compliment Willie Gay, Jr. and this year, Anthony Hitchens. Thus the need for another LB who compliments Gay outside with sideline-to-sideline speed, pass coverage ability and intelligence to go along with in-game flow reads to stop the run either outside or inside. That need is dealt with in a separate article, also… Coming Soon.

.

Perhaps as great a consideration as the offensive line is, once again the defensive line needs prevail. What was lacking when the Chiefs faced off with the Buccaneers, was first, the inability to protect Patrick Mahomes and secondly, the inability of the Defense to put pressure on Tom Brady from outside or especially inside. Brady is a traditional pocket passing QB and the Chiefs failed on the interior and lacked the talent otherwise — inside or outside — to get the job done. The DL position group needs and potentials will also be addressed soon.

.

Addressing FB, TE, QB and RB

Let’s take a look at these four position groups logically and address their state and potential for the Draft, or even a free agent signing.

Even when needing to protect Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs seldom use a Tight End, but when they do, they use Mr. Sherman, the “Sausage.” Anthony Sherman doesn’t use up a lot of capital to be on the team. He is a leader, a cheerleader and plays a focused role on special teams. Unless the Chiefs decide their cap money’s are too tight and his cost too steep, I see no change for the Fullback position.

Potential 2021 Fullback Draft Pick? – None

.

Tight End

The face of the Tight End go-to man will be Travis Kelce… even after he retires. Preceding him are Fred Arbanas and are Tony Gonzalez. That is 3 stellar names in the role of Tight End which have wide NFL recognition. Right now we have the best in the business, preceded by the best in the business, so to speak.

What we need is a Demetrius Harris that doesn’t drop passes. Period. Nick Keiser, Deon Yelder, and Ricky Seals-Jones are familiar with the Chiefs offense. All Three are Free Agents. All three are now knowledgeable about the Chiefs playbook and how the TE Role fits their own particular skill sets. Yelder may be the best blocker. Nick Keiser may have the best ceiling. Ricky Seals-Jones was a disappointment for me in 2020.

.

With other much higher priority work to be done, I do not expect a draft pick being used for a Tight End.

.

Potential 2021 Tight End Draft Pick? Unlikely or None

.

If the Chiefs can find a Draft pick alter in the draft who fits the TE bill and is not superseded by a higher need and player, the Chiefs could make such a pick. That likelihood is low on the needs priority list.

.

Quarterback

We have no real need to draft a Quarterback, After all, we have one-half Billion dollars committed to Patrick Mahomes.

The need for the QB role will be internal and it is to re-sign two of the following QB’s for the opening roster. Chad Henne, Matt Moore, Jordan Ta’amu and a camp body. Whatever they do this will not be something which the Chiefs use a draft pick for or even spend money on, or for an expensive Free Agent.

.

If I were Veach, I would keep an eye on Alex Smith. If other teams write him off we need him back home and Veach/Reid should transition him from a QB backup role to a QB Coach. If AS/11 gets no respect, I have a ton of it. Bring him back! Smith put the WFT (sheesh), in position to get into the playoffs, and they did. That says a lot about the man, his leadership and on the field presence. Get him home after he is done playing for heaven’s sake. The draft will be used to get us back to the Super Bowl. No draft pick here. The Chiefs have the premier QB in the NFL already at the helm. It would be a good idea to bring a young player into the fold who more closely mirrors the play of Patrick Lavon Mahomes. Enough said.

Potential 2021 Quarterback Draft Pick? – None

.

Running Back

I can’t even identify that the Chiefs must make a move to bring aboard another RB except to say that a quality addition to the RB group can’t hurt. The Chiefs have a feature running back with Clyde Edwards-Helaire whom they selected in the first round of the 2020 draft.

The Chiefs have a solid #2 RB in the person of Darrell Williams. They Chiefs have a solid #3 RB in the person of Damien Williams who opted out last season. Darwin Thompson, a Chiefs draft pick two years ago is another potential for the Roster in 2021. He has been used little and I’m not sure of the Chiefs direction with the player. Lastly, Le’Veon Bell could be brought back and his experience has got to give the group a solid presentation of varied skill sets and the gravitas of having a great, experienced RB in the group. All five men are very solid receivers out of the backfield and all are capable of blocking from the backfield position and even lining up on the wing. All five men are intimately versed in the Chiefs playbook.

Potential 2021 Running Back Draft Pick? – None

.

FB, TE, QB and RB: Summation

TE, FB, QB and RB are low on any priority list for Brett Veach and Company. In a previous article about Chiefs Free Agents, I covered all the above RB’s. The only one I left off was Damien Williams because he was out last year. Williams will return to the 2021 roster as I found out this week. If the Chiefs find the right player for a Tight End, I can see Veach making that selection. I am not enamored with any of our Tight Ends other than Travis Kelce, otherwise, I don’t foresee a draft pick in any of the four positions. That’s my bottom line and I’m sticking to it.
