With the Kansas City Chiefs Schedule Release coming out this past week, it was a piecemeal affair with parts of their schedule being released a little bit at a time, here and there. When we finally got the full meal deal on Thursday evening, we all began to predict the wins and the losses. Here’s my take:
.
WEEK 1 – Sept. 7: vs. Detroit Lions (TNF) – Lions 21, Chiefs 34
While we know Andy Reid is excellent in games he has more time to prepare for, the Detroit Lions have more time to prepare too, and finished the 2022 season strong, going 8-and-2 in their last ten games.
.
WEEK 2 – Sept. 17: at Jacksonville Jaguars – Chiefs 28, Jags 24
The Jags are a team making great progress and with the addition of OT Anton Harrison, their pass protection should only get better than it was in 2022. An overlooked aspect of this game is that Andy Reid will once again have extra days to prepare.
.
WEEK 3 – Sept. 24: vs. Chicago Bears – Chiefs 38, Bears 14
The Bears have many holes in their roster while the Chiefs second teamers could probably beat Chicago’s first teamers. Now having Matt Nagy as the Chiefs OC — and the Bears ex-HC from 2018-to-2021 — won’t hurt at all either.
.
WEEK 4 – Oct. 1: at New York Jets (SNF) – Chiefs 34, Jets 28
The game everyone has been waiting for – if you live in New York – has Aaron Rodgers still trying to adjust to life in the AFC, while Patrick Mahomes is adjusting to increased pocket protection… and wins this one going away. Mahomes has now beaten every other team in the NFL. The final score was made much closer — than it appears — with the Jets scoring 2 TDs late in the game.
.
WEEK 5 – Oct. 8: at Minnesota Vikings – Chiefs 28, Vikings 31
This is one of the few losses the Chiefs suffer in 2023. Vikings QB Kirk Cousins plays a great game. Maybe this one is a loss because the Chiefs are looking forward, too much, to their coming intra-divisional battle with the Denver Broncos in four days.
.
WEEK 6 – Oct. 12: vs. Denver Broncos (TNF) – Chiefs 35, Broncos 24
The Chiefs underestimate the positive effects of Sean Payton but in the end, they come up with two late-late scores to take the game away from the visitors. That’s long before some fans hit the exits early thinking the game was lost.
.
WEEK 7 – Oct. 22: vs. Los Angeles Chargers – Chargers 24, Chiefs 44
The Chargers have been the annual projected winner of the AFC West for years now, but nothing they do seems to make a difference. This year is the same. QB Justin Herbert is owned by Patrick Mahomes and with the Chiefs increased defensive prowess, the Bolts don’t have a chance from the beginning.
.
WEEK 8 – Oct. 29: at Denver Broncos – Chiefs 28, Broncos 31
The Broncos finally break through and beat the Chiefs. Since November of 2015, the Chiefs have beaten the Broncos 15 (now 16 times including earlier this year in week 6). Russell Wilson is beginning to look like the Russell Wilson of old, and he does jsut enough to take down our favorite team.
.
WEEK 9 – Nov. 5: vs. Miami Dolphins – Chiefs 45, Dolphins 24
This game is being played in Frankfurt, Germany and the Miami Dolphins come out swinging, but only can muster three TDs, however, two of them by Tyreek Hill. Consequently, Hill goes on a Twitter rampage afterwords, but the good guys win in the end. Mahomes throws five (5) TDs with zero INTs and that’s just too much for Miami to handle.
.
WEEK 10 – Nov. 12: BYE
The Chiefs come out the big winners concerning the BYE Week. While the Eagles have a BYE Week in the week just prior to their meeting with the Chiefs in mid November, the Chiefs players get some extra time off while Andy Reid prepares to meet his old team again and we all know how Reid does with extra time to prepare. Also, the timing of this BYE Week gives HC Andy Reid the perfect opportunity to adjust his OL lineup if he decides he wants to. That way, the OL will be a strength heading into the season’s stretch run.
.
WEEK 11 – Nov. 20: vs. Philadelphia Eagles (MNF) – Eagles 28, Chiefs 35
The Chiefs like to dominate the teams they can dominate whenever possible, and they seem to have Philly’s number. The new OTs are coming thorough for the Chiefs and once again hold the Eagles terrific pass rush to zero sacks. That’s enough for Patrick Mahomes and his running back crew to make an impact… again.
.
WEEK 12 – Nov. 26: at Las Vegas Raiders – Chiefs 41, Raiders 21
The Chiefs hammer the suffering Raiders one again. This time it is in Vegas and the curse fo the buried Chiefs banner under the stadium comes to light once again. The Raiders first four picks in the recent draft all contribute: DL, Tyree Wilson, TE, Michael Mayer, DL Byron Young, and WR Tre Tucker. All were top 100 picks and they each will help this team down the road.
.
WEEK 13 – Dec. 3: at Green Bay (SNF) – Chiefs 51, Packers 17
The game wasn’t even that close… even though it was in Green Bay, the Chiefs came out and blasted the Packs new QB, Jordan Love. The defense had one of it’s best games and the Packers are now left with the decision of whether or not to draft a new — and better — QB than the young one they have now.
.
WEEK 14 – Dec. 10: vs. Buffalo Bills – Chiefs 27, Bills 28
The Chiefs come away with their third loss of the season but leave Buffalo still wondering about their 2021 loss to K.C. and what could have been… if not for the Grim Reaper. Chiefs players recognize the importance of winning in the Post Season as opposed to just winning a regular season game. Chiefs players seem unbothered by the loss in post game interviews..
.
WEEK 15 – Dec. 18: at New England Patriots (MNF) – Chiefs 35, Pats 21
The Chiefs are on a different level than the Pats now, especially since TB left them for the Buccaneers. The Patriots first three picks in the 2023 NFL Draft were all defensive players: CB Christian Gonzalez, EDGE Keion White, and LB Marte Mapu. I’m not sure that any of those picks will offset the loss of Safety supreme Devin McCourty, but the real challenge for the Pats is scoring, which they don’t appear to be able to do much of.
.
WEEK 16 – Dec. 25: vs. Las Vegas Raiders – Chiefs 35, Raiders 21
The Chiefs offense has gotten comfortable scoring boat loads of points and so the raiders anemic defense can’t stop them at all. The Chiefs punt once in this game but Mahomes throws for 5 TDs… again and K.C. wins going away. Chiefs fans won’t allow the Raiders to forget when they drove their busses around Arrowhead Stadium a few years back, and whenever the Raiders had the ball the fan-noise was off the charts.
.
WEEK 17 – Dec. 31: vs. Cincinnati Bengals – Chiefs 35, Bengals 21
The Chiefs fans get to celebrate a very HAPPY New Year with this slaying of their football demons. The Bengal players come to town signing a “We Beat You Thee of the Past Four Times” tune… but leave with their tails beneath their legs. What happened in the past is just that now –> the Past. The Chiefs come out strong early and never look back. The Bengals keep wondering — on the side lines — how and the heck did they ever beat this team?
.
WEEK 18 – Jan. 7: at Los Angeles Chargers – Chiefs 28, Chargers 27
The Chiefs will have the opportunity to rest starters in this game if they want to. The Chargers are motivated — once again — to play the role of the spoilers, but it doesn’t matter as the Chiefs backups play a solid game and still come out on top. Chiefs QB#2, Blaine Gabbert, shows why he was kept, and not a younger QB. The Chiefs get to sample their newest RBs like deneric Prince and even give La’Mical Perine a shot and, he does well.
.
Well, that brings this season’ record up to 14-and-3. What do you think Chiefs fans? Are there any games you think the Chiefs should be projected to lose? What kind of record do you think K.C. will end up with in the 2023 season? FYI, if you have heard, K.C. is the only team projected to win every game this year by the odds-makers.
