Chiefs: A Career Year Forthcoming

Laddie Morse

Last year it was no secret, the Kansas City Chiefs were needing help at the wide receiver position. This year, GM Brett Veach has attempted to redemdy that hole in the roster by signing WR Hollywood Brown then drafting the fastest WR ever in Xavier Worthy. While we don’t necessaruly expect Worthy to have a breakout year, there are others who could be up for a career year.

Brown had 1,008 yards in his third year in the league after being drafted 25th overall by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2019 NFL Draft. Our illustrious GM Brett Veach has a habit of going after players who were previously drafted high and Brown is no exception. Brown will essentially need to record more than 1,008 yards receiving to have a career year. However, by looking over his stats there is something rather concerning:

My concern is Brown’s drop rate (targets to receptions). Here’s the bottom ten (worst) WRs in drop rate in the 2023 season offered by StatMuse.com.

While Keenan Allen was the worst in the league with a 72% catch rate Hollywood Brown has a 59.6% catch rate over his five year career. If you’re worried, you should be. Let me know if I’ve got my stats all mixed up, I’m not very good in that department.

In any event, Brown must average about 60 yards per game for 17 games to end up with a career year.

With Chris Jones signing a new huge deal this offseason and establishing himslef as the best DT in the game, we should expect a career year from him. Right? Of course right! However, he’s had 15.5 sacks in a year… twice. For him to reach 16 or more would be a sensational season. Here are Chris Jones career stats in sacks:

It’ll be a stretch for CJ to reach 15.5 sacks this year but that is the expectation. We’ll see.

RB Isiah Pacheco had 935 rushing yards last season. As you can tell by his stats (below) he need’s only 65 more yards to reach a 1,000 yard season. Since he improved by 105 yards from his rookie year to his sophomore season, he should accomplish that easily.

Pop (as he is known by his team mates) once said in his rookie season:

It looks like that’s exactly what he did too (0:08).

Pacheco started two more games in his second season than he did in his rookie campaign so if he starts any more games than that, he should be a shoe-in to have a career year.

Are there any other players you can think of who might be ready to have a career year?
