A Paramount Chiefs Mock Draft

(and realistic too)

A Paramount Chiefs Mock Draft – We covered another session of the ArrowheadOne Mocks last week — Mock Chalk Talk — but I want to address my dream world outcome of Chiefly things, doing what I think may be a quite reasonable Mock and at the same time have this be a dream come true result. That has got to be the best of both worlds, right? We have the GM and his staff, as well as the Coaches expertise, all rolled into the ultimate NFL Draft Presence… coming soon to a theater near you… actually three weeks from Thursday.

.

Since we’re anticipating further players added by Free Agency, or, in the possibility that a trade is consummated before Draft day, I am making two assumptions (oh, and now they’re saying, “There he goes again!”).

.

With those two presumptions out of the way (found below), let’s take a peak at a Mock Draft which I think covers the basic remaining needs of the team, which is a “Dream Draft,” at the same time. Keep in mind, selection of players in this case depends on both of the above events having already taken place, which in this case, would mean that KC is adding WR to it’s primary needs list.

.

Brett Veach (IVWT) is drafting for his 4th year as GM. Each year he has improved his player selections and 2019 was tops. He was ranked as the 3rd best GM in the NFL this year and his staff is top notch. The front office support is superior and he has a close working relationship with Andy Reid and his coaching staff. All positives.

.

.

Two Mock Presumptions:

1. Brett Veach signs a Free Agent LOT. It is not necessary for the player to be the future of the Left Offensive Tackle, position, rather it provides Veach flexibility at any given point in the draft. That means, Veach does not need to select a “Plug and Play” OT in any round. That could still happen. The Chiefs might have available to them either Alex Leatherwood (Alabama) or Liam Eichenberg (OSU), both of whom are rated as the type of player who can come aboard and play the LOT position, immediately, day one. If I had my choice, round one or two for either player, it would be a dream to pick Eichenberg in round 2. If Veach thought he was the right player, I can see Liam selected in round one. Ditto Leatherwood.

.

2. Brett Veach Makes a trade – Either before the draft or in the process of working down through selections, Veach administers a trade. There are multiple candidates to consider but my nomination is the player I feel would have a distinct advantage in the trade, both for KC and for the player. That player is Mecole Hardman. Hardman has topic speed as his primary resume qualification. I have stated before this is not about any personal dislike of Hardman, a fact which I have stated before, but Mecole needs a team where he can be the designated over the top Wide Receiver and the Chiefs do not provide him that opportunity. It would benefit the Chiefs in my supposition because it would give them another top 100 pick for the 2020 draft. One thing that would eliminate the option of trading Mecole Hardman is that in 2021’s Spring Training, he would suddenly lose his hard-headedness, and take on the role of emulating what Sammy Watkins brought to the table. He would not make a decision to run his own route… he would stick to the designed play.. and so on. Are you listening Mecole?

Note: The accompanying Mock does not accommodate the trade of Hardman for the added third round pick.

.

For the sake of clarity, I define a Possession Receiver, and the talents I am looking for, which are aside from those of a #1 WR, as specifically as I am able but it’s complicated. He does not have to be an over the top speedster, but must possess good speed. I am trying to be specific. The Chiefs already have a #1 WR. For any team without that player, Hardman would fill the bill. Thus far, I would judge that the Chiefs have a #1 WR and a #1A WR. Too often Mecole Hardman has demonstrated “immaturity” as a WR and cannot be trusted with the “Possession Receiver” role. Without trading Hardman, I see that I have no replacement for the skills and Athletic ability of Sammy Watkins, which for my outlook, is indeed the ‘Possession Receiver’ or “X” Receiver.

.

Some observers do not like this terminology, or have one which differs from my own. So here is what I mean. This “Possession WR” is a player who will have very good speed, and is capable of going over the top. He must also possess speed to be able to run the Jet Sweep, for example. The Chiefs should not draft without that consideration, but that player must have talents that go well beyond just being a deep threat. He must have quick, decisive moves (multiple), exploding off the LoS whether outside or in the slot. The ideal player has a significant route tree already developed, he runs crisp, exact routes, has great hands for ball and is able to use his SAQ to break free and get YAC. One last thing is: Football intelligence. Knowing what to do when your QB is scrambling, get to a hole to receive a pass so that you present a true threat in those circumstances. This is a must have skill as well.

.

This definition of a mix of player skills is tough to consider, but in this draft, there are several WR’s that can be had all the way out to round 5, or could develop into that type of WR, and do so quickly. The draft is very deep in skilled Wide Receivers. That needs list began as Offensive Line, Defensive Line, and Linebacker.

.

For this latter position, envision Weak and Strong Side players with an added LB for the 4-3 base. Call it an ILB if you wish and the other two players SILB (Strongside) and WILB (Weakside). If I cover all three of those needs and add WR to the list, which think it truly is, despite not being listed by Brett Veach, I could possibly mark as complete the OL and DL due to Free Agents already signed. However, I am not going to do so. I will say that a DE keeps that position group in the list because, though I believe Taco Charlton will have a breakout season in 2021. Inside? I see the Chiefs totally solid in this regard with the signing of Jarran Reed.

.

For the Interior IOL, adding Austin Blythe was a move in the right direction. Signing a bridge Left Tackle as one of my assumptions, gives depth at OT, but still has the need for the future in this draft. Both the OL and DL are incomplete. The same is true for Linebacker. We may have Anthony Hitchens and Willie Gay, but Damien Wilson is not returning, having signed with the Jaguars as a UFA. At the same time, K.C. drafted Dorian O’Daniel who has never been given enough snaps to think that the coaching staff really believes in his future. Nor does Ben Niemann resolve the position group… to the level of being able to decide that this position group is strong. At the same time, for the money K.C. pays Anthony Hitchens, due to his inadequate play when defending against the pass, I don’t seem him as the future for the Strong Side LB. Maybe middle man in a standard 4-3, but too costly for that limited role.

.

Here, I see the Chiefs as needing to add two LBs. I am adding a Wide Receiver and maybe two of them, to the list that Brett Veach spoke about. The reason for this is that we know that Brett Veach has negotiated with at least three Free Agents and none of them accepted an offer from KC. Cornerback would follow in needs based importance as would Tight End and Free Safety. I don’t believe that there is a worthy TE draft pick to be on Veach’s charts in this draft. Nor do I see the need for a Running Back in the cards either.

.

On to the Mock

This is a Trade back mock from #31 to pick 7 of round 2 plus, pick 9 in round 3 is added.

.

R2 Pick 7 (CAR): Alex Leatherwood, OT/OG, Alabama

-Veach obtains an immediate starter for Left Tackle

R2 Pick 31: Quinn Meinerz, OC, Wisconsin-Whitewater

– Meinerz will compete for a starter role quickly

R3 Pick 9 (CAR): Dyami Brown, WR, North Carolina

– Brown is one of the ideal fits for Possession Receiver

R3 Pick 30: Jabril Cox, ILB/OLB, LSU

– As late as round 3 there are still OLB’s available – Cox fits like a glove

R4 Pick 31: Nico Collins, WR, Michigan

– A WR with great length add to the mix

R4 Pick 39 (COMP): Ambry Thomas, CB, Michigan

– Dorsey and Veach both verbalize constant need for CB’s

R5 Pick 31: Mustafa Johnson, DT/DE, Colorado

– DT Depth and future IDL despite having added Reed

R5 Pick 37 (COMP): Daelin Hayes, DE, Notre Dame

– Adds to depth at Edge despite Clark, Taco & Ward

R6 Pick 24: Jamien Sherwood, FS/SS, Auburn

– Sorensen is back but is a hybrid Specialist. Need that next FS

.

Note 1: Round 3 additional pick cannot be done without the trade having been consummated on the Mock Simulators. The Chiefs could possibly add another round 3 pick by trading Hardman. Wishing that this would be the case!

Note 2: Would like to get OC Landon Dickerson landed for the Center Role and also be able to add Teven Jenkins while still getting my LB of choice!!! That would, in my mind, be nearly draft Perfection.

Note 3: I could have selected Eichenberg, but for this particular example, I chose Leatherwood.

.

In this mock, which was done April 3rd at First-Pick, the selections made cover LOT, Center, a Possession WR, a WR with length and toughness, a CB who I think would mix well with the existing players whether Veach signs back (UFA Bashaud Breeland or not), and then I add two more DL, Inside and Out to keep building depth and strength. My last chosen selection is to add to the back end of the defense, a player who can play up but also as the Free safety in a split duty, or single high.

.

There you have it. A top Notch Mock Draft, and a Dream Draft at the same time, at least in my “addled” mind.
