Chiefs And the End Day at the Scouting Combine

Players gather for direction – Combine, Day 4 (Getty image)

After Day three’s results, Things oriented to settling out the top players who either confirmed their status for the draft. The good part of the day was oriented to witnessing players who were lower in appreciation than they had been previously but improved their draft outlook with good performances in the various metrics. So to add to the Day 3 review, here is a sampling.

Linebacker Examples: Chad Muma(Wyoming), Christian Harris(Alabama) – 4.44-40. In Christians’ case, he once was seen as the top LB who would be drafted in 2022 but others superceded him, such as Devin Lloyd. Harris solidified my view of him and Muma made his way onto my personal Draft Board.

Troy Andersen(Montana St) set the best time of the day for Linebackers with a 4.41-40.

As far as I can am able to see after I watched Andersen’s on-the-field performance was very good. He will be a day 2 pick and was under my radar prior to this.

Defensive End Examples: There are so many DEs who are going to be very good. It’s difficult to quantify the number of good edge players in this draft and this showed well in the Combine Metrics. Yesterday, I listed the names that will be early in the draft, Day 1 of course but Day 2 choices galore.

As I noted in that article, my draft Crush is Boye Mafe(Minnesota). Trey Walker(Georgia) posted very good numbers as expected. Georgia, Walker played inside more as a pass-rushing defensive tackle, but he can firmly slide out to the defensive end spot as a pro. Walker had a 4.51-40. His vertical was good at 35 1/2 inches. Why I think he fits on any defense scheme was his 3 cone drill which was a fantastic 6.89 seconds. Another reason to love him is he played a lot of downs inside for the Bulldogs. David Ojabo(Michigan) is another Edge player who stands out. I think Jermaine Johnson(FSU) elevated his cause. He may just be an Alien. At the combine, he worked with the Linebackers but will be an edge defender.

Cornerbacks

Taking a hard look at Cornerback possibilities and there were numerous players who panned well today. I don’t think any Cornerback drops suddenly on this list. So it is a “Pick ’em list”. Anywhere Brett Veach can fit the right player on his draft board is going to be a successful NFL Player. What will matter is that they fulfill the promise and they can do so quickly.

O Cam Taylor-Britt CB Nebraska 4.45* thrust himself into view and helped his cause entered my attention at the combine by his performance. He has speed, agility and was a 3-year starter and team captain. I think Gardener, Armour-Davis, and Castro-Fields had very good days. None of the players that I am listing is rated as a round 1 pick. It’s sort of a “you pick ’em” type list. Before looking at my list, I will observe:

O Derek Stingley (CB) LSU will go off the board before pick 15. Another unusual pick will be drafted in round one, Kyle Hamilton. Unusual because he is a 6’4″ Safety and really the only safety who is going to go in round one, at least as far as I can see.
O Jack Jones DB 4.54
O Chase Lucas DB 4.56
O MJ Emerson Mississippi – State CB 4.58
O Ahmed Gardner (Cincinnati) DB- 4.52*
O Mario Goodrich (Clemson) CB – 4.61
O Jalyn Armour-Davis(Alabama) CB – 4.44*
O Tariq Castro-Fields(PSU) CB – 4.47*

Safeties

Here is a List of the Safeties. Only Hamilton is ranked as a round one type of safety and he is a Mutant. The projected round is in the right-most column. Of special interest for me is Alontae Taylor who can also play CB. He is one player that I will take the time to watch game tape due to his versatility to the CB role.

That’s all I’ve got for this session. Some very interesting players with great potential are going to be available for the Chief’s selection.
