Chiefs and the NFL by the Numbers

Chiefs and the NFL by the Numbers – 32 teams times 53 men on each roster is 1696 players in the NFL. With 56 players already reporting contracting the Covid-19 and 66 players Opting Out… that’s 120+ players with Covid issues (so far). 120 (rounding it off) is 7% of 1696. The question then becomes, as these players begin to run and jump and crash into each other, how many more will drive that number up? Up to the point that the league decides to shut it down… like the NBA has already done in mid-season and MLB did before their season even began? Sure, both have restarted, but the NBA has the advantage of playing all their games in a bubble and MLB is teetering on the brink of no season at all. We should know a whole lot more about the fate of the NFL in the next 24 days: the end of August.

Demarcus Robinson’s

1-Handed Catch

Part of the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs amazing season was a terrific 1-handed catch at the back of the Arrowhead end zone versus the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3 of 2019.

“We’re launching NFL Votes to inspire everyone in the NFL family – including our fans – to participate in the civic process by getting registered to vote and ultimately exercising their right to vote. When meeting with players and legends to listen to the things they’re passionate about, voting is clearly an issue of critical importance.”

Will #4 Chad Henne be this year’s backup QB… or #8, Matt Moore? Reid brought Moore back for a reason, so the one who falters even a little bit during training camp will be the first to hit the road, because I doubt the Chiefs are keeping three QBs this year.

#5 Tommy Townsend Will Be a Real “Boomer” of a Punter

Michael Travis Rose had a great piece on the Chiefs new punter, #5 Tommy Townsend, this week. Catch it if you haven’t had the chance to read his awesome article.

“A total of 66 players have opted out of the 2020 NFL season due to the coronavirus pandemic, nearly half of them linemen. Twenty offensive linemen and 11 on defense opted out before Thursday’s deadline. Players with a medical opt out will receive a $350,000 stipend, while those voluntarily opting out receive $150,000 as an advance against future salaries.”

Who, What, Where, When, & Wylie

Andrew Wylie appears to have a clear path to becoming the replacement for Laurent Duvernay-Tardif at Right Guard in 2020. While Lucas Niang has Opted Out for this season, he was likely only going to serve as a backup along the OL and be used as a sub as a Tackle, so coaches could get a feel for his future value at one of those positions. With Kelechi Osemele likely headed for the Left Guard position that leaves these players vying for the starting spot at RG: Mike Remmers (likely to be used as a swing tackle because he’s played so many positions along the line, except Center), Martinas Rankin (who’s been moved to the PUP list and won’t be available for the first six weeks), Nick Allegretti (a second year player who may be considered at Center), Ryan Hunter (Canadian who was a UDFA last year), Greg Senat (a 6th round pick of the Ravens in 2018). Wylie has 27 regular season games of experience and has stated 21 of those. So, I’d imagine his experience will get him the nod.

Patriots opt-outs are official with a league-high 8 players

USAToday.com reports that the Patriots have 8 players Opt Out for the 2020 season. While the Pats are the supposed big loser in the 2020 Opt Out race with 8 players, I’m highly suspicious as to what they are really doing. It saves them millions of cap dollars this season. If HC Bill Belichick wants to sit pat and roll the savings over to next year when the cap will be much less, he’ll have huge advantage in not only signing Free Agents but in trading draft capital for cap dollars allowing him to move up and select one of the so-called superior QBs coming out in next year’s draft. Well known as the “Cheatriots” because of several shady past events, which they’ve been fined by the league for, makes competitor’s fans — like myself — even more mistrustful than ever.

A Stitch in Time

Chiefs Khalen Saunders Ready with Chris Jones Out | Kansas City ...

#99 IDL Khalen Saunders could have a leap year like fellow IDL Derrick Nnadi had in his second season in 2019. If Nnadi, Saunders and Mike Pennel can shut down the run from the beginning of the season — instead of waiting until week 11 — then this defense should end up in the top five… as some very astute writers have predicted.

Break dem Ankles

#10 Tyreek Hill – It’s a pure pleasure to watch Tyreek Hill use his speed to fake out defenders so completely that they fall down. One of the great gratifications of watching the Chiefs these days is keeping track of The Cheetah as they line up on each play from scrimmage.

As you can tell, the season can’t get here fast enough for me. That is, if there’s going to be a season. Here’s hoping!
