Chiefs at 49ers: Preseason Game Review

If you’re a Patrick Mahomes II fan and that’s the only reason you follow the Chiefs, then this preseason game was not for you. Mahomes played the first series in San Francisco then he was done. He was one for two for four yards. Big whoopee right? The performance which should be cheered was the play of the defense, especially the D-line. Yes, Chris Jones had a Sack in this game!

5 sacks, plus a strip which should have been counted as a sack, 4 tackles for a loss, 6 passes defensed… all kept K.C. In this game. A game won by K.C. in the end: 19-to-16.

Tommy Townsend punted really well and had one punt go out of bounds at the one yard line. Most times Townsend punted, he flipped the field and pinned the 49ers deep in their own end of the field. Also on Special teams, kicker Harrison Butker just missed short on a 62 yard field goal. The Chiefs kicking team looks like it will be solid, and improved this year. However, Butker did miss an extra point late and so we’re hoping he doesn’t have those kinds of problems this season, like he did a year ago.

AO Super Blogger, Chiefs-Kings-A’s had great seats at this game (as you can see above). He sent me a video of Chris Jones pre-game pep talk, but we couldn’t hear CJ so I’ve decided not to post that one. However, Chiefs-Kings-A’s also sent me a clip of the Chiefs 1st TD, a pass from Chad Henne to Bryon Pringle which was right in front of them:

We all thank you Chiefs-Kings-A’s. You rock!

More excitement came at the end of the 4th quarter. With the Chiefs ahead 13-to-9, the 49ers scored a TD leaving 2:37 on the clock and owning a 16-to-13 lead. Chiefs 4th string QB, Shane Buechele, navigated the field for a 68 yard drive ending in a QB option keeper and a TD, making the score 19-to-16.

After K.C. kicked off, on the ensuing drive, the 49ers were assessed with a penalty with :08 seconds left but since a :10 second runoff is required, the game came to an abrupt ending.

Concerns still include the run defense. The 49ers rushed for 175 yards and 6.0 yards per carry. The DL may have come up with pressure on most passing downs for the Niners, but stopping the run will have to be an emphasis in coming weeks in practice and in the second and third preseason games.

.

Got to give some love to the Offensive Line. The Chiefs won the coin toss and deferred to receive the kickoff to begin the second half so the 49ers began the game with six plays then they were out. When K.C. got the ball, they started the game with a 10 yard run by Clyde Edwards-Helaire was a pleasure to watch as the OL cleared the way with ease. Two plays later they gave Patrick Mahomes all the protection in the world and while that was a good beginning, it was 4-and-out for the offense. And… that was it for Patrick Mahomes.

.

.

Trey Lance, the 49ers rookie QB who is supposed to be pushing starter Jimmy Garoppolo, looked pedestrian at best. However, he had one 80 yard passing play to Trent Sherfield for a TD. If not for that play, Lance would have only had 48 yards passing, and he 49ers would have had a total of 128 yards passing. As it was, rookie UDFA for K.C. Devon Key over played the route and Sherfield broke one off for a long TD.

.

That’s all to say, the Chiefs DBs had a fairly solid day and still limited the 49ers to 208 yards passing. Safety Armani Watts also came away with an INT when they were driving deep into Chiefs territory.

Wideout of the Game: #83, Daurice Fountain

4 receptions for 38 yards. Tops among all Chiefs receivers in the number of catches and tops in receiving yards.

WR (TE) Honorable Mention: #88, Jody Fortson

Fortson had three catches for 32 yards and produced a very good performance.

.

.

Kick Returner of the Game: #21, Mike Hughes

With the returns made by Mike Hughes it looks like he’s already nailed that position down. If the alternative is Mecole Hardman, that means Hardman will have to limit his Offensive snaps. Hughes has several good returns in this game, so I’m hoping they move on from that determination.

Running Back of the Game: #1, Jerick McKinnon

McKinnon had 3 carries for 19 yards. While that’s not a lot of yards, it is 6.3 yards per carry and he showed his worth in this game. It was a homecoming of sorts for McKinnon, as he once played for the 49ers.

Kicker of the Game: #5, Tommy Townsend

Anytime you can kick the ball out of bounds at your opponents 1-yard line, you’re going to get, “The Kicker of the Game Award.”

Riley Cole and Tim Ward led the team in tackles with 5 each. Nick Bolton had two tackles and looked sharp while he was in the game. Let me know what your takeaways from Preseason Game Number One were. Isn’t it great to have Chiefs football back!
