The Kansas City Chiefs now officially have 10 picks in the 2017 NFL draft. That means the Chiefs received 4 compensatory picks in all for the loss of OG Jeff Allen, S Tyvon Branch, QB Chase Daniel, CB Sean Smith, and OT Donald Stephenson while gaining the services of full-time starter free agent RT Mitchell Schwartz. League-wide, there were eleven (11) comp picks handed out that will be added onto the end of the third round. There were 21 other compensatory picks handed out beyond that.
The Chiefs are receiving compensatory picks that include a 3rd rounder, pick #104 overall — a 5th rounder, #182 overall — a 6th rounder, #218 overall — and another 6th rounder – #220 overall.
You can add that to the six picks the Chiefs had previously, no not seven — because they lost a sixth-rounder last year when Commissioner Roger Goodell penalized the Chiefs for an early inappropriate communication the previous year to that with Jeremy Maclin who the Chiefs signed as a free agent in 2015.
The additional picks should give John Dorsey all the room and reason he needs to trade up and down the draft board to secure the players he wants most. That kind of flexibility on draft day can’t be minimized. We saw Dorsey trade backward out of the first round to take emerging superstar DL Chris Jones, then pick up and extra third-rounder by doing that, so no one should be surprised when they hear “Oops!… I Did It Again” playing in the background of the Chiefs draft war room.
Exciting times. Dream big Chiefs fans. I am.
