Chiefs Best Plays of 2023

Laddie Morse

The Kansas City Chiefs had one heck of a season filled with great plays on both Defense and Offense. You might expect the best plays for the 2023 season to mostly be on Offense, but since the Defense finished second overall in Team Defense, we’ll stats there.

When the Chiefs played the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt Germany last November, Bryan Cook was the recipient of a lateral by Mike Edwards when Tyreek Hill had been hit hard by Trent McDuffie and the ball came out in their backfield. Cook took the lateral and kicked his knees up high and took it all the way to the end zone for a decisive score (0:42).

Since I love lateral’s so much… here’s one from Travis Kelce in week 6, to Noah Gray. It may not have scored a TD, but it was an exciting play never-the-less (0:14).

Here’s a couple of different views of a catch by Justin Watson against the Vikings (0:10).

Second View (0:19).

I’m including the whole tweet here because the author — Brad Henson Productions — makes a great point. Plus, McDuffie puts the big hurt on Tyreek Hill:

The great play by McDuffie is highlighted by the fact that if he was one second earlier he’d have been flagged and if he was one second later, Hill may have been off to the races. His timing on this play was impeccable. Amazing really.

Isiah Pacheco had a nice long run — finally — against the NY Jets (0:42).

You gotta love how Pop leaps over the goal line!

The Chiefs may miss Mike Edwards this year but then again, with Jaden Hicks and Bryan Cook and Chamarri Conner returing, they may not. Still, here is my favorite play by Edwards (1:03).

Let’s give credit where credit is due. –> it was Charles Omenihu (#90) who made that fumble happen!

Here’s perhaps my fvorite play by Rashee Rice. If he hadn’t been involved in the street racing debacle it may have been listed much higher.

It’s rare that a specific play is worth a lot of money, and in this case it was a sack worth $1.25 Million dollars for Chris Jones. I think everyone in the known universe was cheering for him when it finally happened (0:26).

There may not be a more sensational play from 2023 than the play made by both Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce (0:08).

Sure, Patrick Mahomes runs around in the backfield before this video shows it happening, but it was the last second — no, millisecond — decision on Mahomes part to pitch the ball towards Travis Kelce that made it all a possibility. I remember thinking as I was watching it live, that Mahomes was just trying to throw the ball away… then… out of nowhere, Travis Kelce appears and makes what may be the best catch of his long and storied career. To this point, I had often been thinking that the “magic” is gone from Mahomes arm and the mythical throws were a thing of the past. Boy oh boy was I mistaken… and boy oh boy am I ever glad to be wrong. Like 100% wrong.

I would be remiss without naming the best play made by the Defense in 2023 and that was the punch out by L’Jarius Sneed to keep the game in hand (0:21).

That play was made in the midst of other confrontations between L’Jarius Sneed and the Ravens WR, Zay Flowers.

Oh, of course, let’s not forget when Mahomes dove at a pylon to score against the Seahawks (0:18).

Oh yeah, I almost forgot the record kick by Harrison Butker for the longest Super Bowl three-pointer made ever.

Do you have some other favorite plays from this past season?
