Chiefs/Bills: The Game That Broke Football

It’s strange to think that Sunday’s game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills was something we’d never seen before, especially for me, someone who thought they’d seen it all. I’m not alone in this view. Here’s what David Bell had to say about the game:

“This 2021 Divisional Playoff game versus the Buffalo Bills is very special. It may be the most gratifying win ever in the History of the Kansas City Chiefs Football Club. It came down to 13 seconds of heart stopping visage… nothing I can think of matches this incredible comeback… the exhilaration we fans felt to witness the storied moments of such a victory.  None of my memories match my thoughts from the past [Chiefs games] in comparison. Yes, I recall the heartbreak of losing the longest game in 1971 or losing Super Bowl Bowl I… nor beating the Vikings in Super Bowl IV.  This AFC Division Game deserves special countenance! The Buffalo Bills should also find a special memory in our hearts. What a hell of a football game.

-David Bell, Rockport, Texas.”

Breaking Greatness

Some very prominent, err, great, players/coaches/celebrities recognize the greatness of the Chiefs win:

Patrick Mahomes worked his magic AGAIN with 3 TDs passes, the biggest coming in overtime to Travis Kelce, in the Chiefs 42-36 victory over the Bills!… Some of the best NFL football I’ve ever seen!Earvin Magic Johnson

“You can’t score in 13 seconds. That doesn’t happen in real life.”

-Tony Romo

“… the Kansas City Chiefs’ 42–36 win over the Bills was one of the rarest and most ridiculous of games, and everyone knew that Buffalo had left too much time on the clock to feel that its lead was secure.”

-The New Yorker By Louisa Thomas

USAToday also revealed that this game had “The Bills and Chiefs gave us the greatest win probability chart in sports history“…

Who would know Patrick Mahomes better than anyone?

“If you want to be the best, you have to beat the best.“

-Tony Romo

I consider that a measuring stick statement. Do you think Josh Allen is thinking today, “Gee, I sure outplayed Patrick Mahomes, so I must be better than he is.” Highly unlikely, in fact he did say, “I have to figure out a way to get better.” Do you know why that is? Because he knew he was not good enough to beat Patrick Mahomes.

And… Melissa Etheridge, who was born the same year as the Chiefs, when they were the Texans said:

TV Ratings Dominance

From TVLine.com:

CBS’ broadcast of the wild, rollercoaster, overtime NFL divisional playoff game between the Chiefs and Bills averaged 34.5 million total viewers on Sunday night (per early numbers)– up 20 percent from the comparable Bucs/Saints game on Fox a year ago.

ABC | AFV (4.7 mil/0.4) and The Rookie (2.7 mil/0.3) each dipped a tenth, while Celeb Wheel of Fortune (4 mil/0.4) and Supermarket Sweep (2.2 mil/0.3) both slipped two tenths ahead of next week’s season finales. NBC | The Secret Life of Pets drew 1.4 mil/0.3. While the game has epic in TV Ratings, the competition failed miserably too. From TheWrap.com:

All three Sunday CW shows — including ”Legends of the Hidden Temple“ season finale — got a 0.0 rating among adults 18-49

Two Minute Warning

Take a look at what made this game so incredibly great, the last two minutes:

All totaled, both teams scored 25 points in the last two minutes of regulation. This is how it looked… if your heart can take it:

On a personal note, I was feeling so good when I woke up this morning, I made Belgian Waffles with organic maple syrup.
