Chiefs: Bolton, Creed, and the Miracle Worker

Last night, in round two of the 2021 NFL draft, the Kansas City Chiefs GM, Brett Veach chose two new Chiefs to join the Kingdom: LB Nick Bolton out of Missouri and OC Creed Humphrey from Oklahoma University. Please help me welcome the two newest Chiefs, Nick Bolton and Creed Humphrey. What may have gone unnoticed in the party atmosphere surrounding the draft is, that Brett Veach solved the Chiefs biggest needs in less than three months of the offseason.

.

“Answer me this? Did Brett Veach rebuild the

complete Offensive Line in less than 60 days?”

-David Bell

.

The addition of Creed Humphrey with the 63rd pick in this draft has given the Offensive line a future at the OC position… at the very least. If you’ll recall, K.C lost the SB because their OL was deficient in depth. 4 of 5 players on the OL were backups starting that day and Brett Veach has guaranteed that something like that will never happen again… not in 2021 anyway.

.

  • LT – Now, Orlando Brown is he starter at LT and Lucas Niang is his backup.
  • RT – Joe Thuney is the starter at LG, and Nick Allegretti is the backup.
  • OC – Austin Blythe or Creed Humphrey is thee starter, and the other one is the backup.
  • RG – LDT or Kyle Long is the starter and the other one is the backup.
  • RT – Mike Remmers or Lucas Niang is the starter, and the other one is the backup.

.

What is remarkable is, that GM Brett Veach has made this OL transformation, so quickly. In football terms… or any other terms… it’s a miracle. Let’s take a look at each of the Chief Day Two picks: LB Nick Bolton and OC Creed Humphrey.

.

.

Pick 58 – Nick Bolton, LB

Nick Bolton became a starter in his freshman year at MU and he’s only gotten better and better, since then. The last two years Bolton really had the position figured out and had 202 tackles in his last two seasons. Bolton’s response to being drafted by the Chiefs:

.

“I’ve been around this community, so being close to

Missouri with the Chiefs was a dream come true.”

.

Bolton can play all three LB position for the Chiefs and the sooner Steve Spagnuolo’s able to depend on him, the more Spags can keep the defense in their primary 4-3 base personnel. Kyle Crabbs at The Draft Network says of Bolton:

.

Missouri linebacker Nick Bolton projects as an impact starter at the NFL level thanks to his linear explosiveness to trigger and attack between the tackles and his ability to deliver jarring hits to ball carriers. Bolton has a pro-ready build and carries himself with confidence in traffic—for better and for worse. Bolton was a standout in Missouri’s defensive front and his role as the leader and enforcer of the Tigers’ defense has groomed him well for a featured role in the heart of an NFL defense.

.

The following ranking services had Bolton rated as:

.

Matt Miller – #35

Daniel Jeremiah – #38

DrafTek – #40

CBS Sports – #68

.

Jeremiah said of the Chiefs picking Bolton, “The Chiefs didn’t have a first round pick but they got a first round talent.” While I was hoping for an outside linebacker in this draft, Bolton should give DC Steve Spagnuolo an immediate rotational LB in the middle of the Chiefs defense. Bolton detects plays well and helps shut down runs between the tackles. His addition to the Chiefs defense should be felt for years to come.

.

.

Pick 63 – Creed Humphrey, OC

Creed Humphrey has been rated the number one Center in this draft by many. I only backed off of him because he is a southpaw and thought the Chiefs wouldn’t want to give Patrick Mahomes another thing to think about — the opposite rotation of the ball — when taking the ball from the shotgun. Apparently, that’s not a concern and with that, the Chiefs just got the best OC in this draft. Humphrey is a 6-foot-5, 315 lbs., stop plug in the middle and I won’t be surprised at all if he takes over as the starter from Austin Blythe before the season starts.

.

Humphrey is just the Chiefs cup of tea. He’s not only a great player — allowing zero sacks in his collegiate career — but he’s a terrific communicator. Here he is on GMFB,

.

.

While he played for OU for four years, he left a classy personal message for Sooner fans:

.

.

In post day-two interviews, Nick Bolton said he knows Wille Gay from a few years ago when he visited Mississippi State and was considering going there and Willie gave him a tour… and Creed Humphrey played with Orlando Brown at OU and said he models his game after Orlando’s, but when the Chiefs had Brown in for a visit after the trade, Brown said to Reid, “You need to go get that guy (referring to Creed).”

.

How is it possible for the Chiefs to lose both Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz… and then make their offensive line better? Brett Veach, that’s how! Veach not only healed the Chiefs offensive line in record time, he waved his magic draft wand and brought the linebacking corp up to the 21st Century simultaneously. It’s so obvious that the Chiefs are building a community of values and are bringing in players of character. Welcome Nick and Creed! You’ll fit right in.
