Chiefs: Building a Touchdown – 9·15·19

Chiefs: Building a Touchdown – 9·15·19 – this week I’ll be featuring the 2nd quarter touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes to tight end Travis Kelce. The score was 14-to-10 Chiefs at the time so the game was still in doubt (in the Raiders minds). Patrick Mahomes and company had just finished executing a 16 play, seven minute drive for the go-ahead score culminating in Mecole Hardman’s first NFL TD. Now, let’s look look deeper into building a touchdown for All-World Tight End Travis Kelce.

There was 3:27  left in the second quarter and since the Chiefs would be receiving the ball right after the half, many were expecting Andy Reid to run a little clock and take one last shot at the end zone in the first half. Nope. TV color analyst Tony Romo was saying the same thing, “Run some clock and keep the Raiders offense off the field.” Instead, it would become a 94-yard, 6-play drive, from Kansas City’s own 6-yard line, taking up less than two minutes in the process.

3:27 – Play One:  – The first and ten play was a running play. Patrick Mahomes was lined up in the shotgun and handed off to Damien Williams, lined up in a lone RB set off Mahomes right shoulder. In this game, running on 1st down became as predictable as an inhale followed by and exhale. The result was a one-yard loss. We know now that the running game was not effective for the Chiefs in this game so we can only imagine it gave the Raiders defense hope only being down by 4 and having the Chiefs backed up at their own 5-yard line. The play started out like this….

… but ended up like this.

2:54 – Play Two: – Second and 12 from the 4-yard line, Mahomes signals DWill to switch from his left shoulder to his right and on the snap, all the receivers except Kelce run go-rountes. Kelce runs down ten yards and does a hook pattern turning back into the middle of the field drawing the interest of the CBs in that area. DWill runs a Wheel route down the right side-line and uses his 4.40 – 40 speed to burn the LB he faced in coverage. Damien makes a good catch and a couple of moves later winds up with a 33 yard gain to the 37 yard line.

2:00 – Play Three (2 Minute Warning): With another 1st and 10, Mahomes motions Watkins across the formation in front of him and Watkins sets up off of DRobs right shoulder who is lined up to Travis Kelce’s right. That’s important here because when the ball is hiked, PMII takes the ball out of the Shotgun and fades to his rear right behind Watkins and Kelce who are tag-teaming the Raiders Left Defensive end. Demarcus Robinson crosses the Raiders defensive backfield from right to left and finds room there where Mahomes hits him for a 43-yard gain, all the way down to their 20-yard line. Robinson had a terrific day and has improved as a WR ten fold. Here, he beats the press off the los and gets the CBs hands off of him, then as the defense passes him off to the next CB, he shades his pattern to the right outside of he field, to draw the Safety in that direction. As the Safety crosses the formation, DRob breaks left into the open part of the field where Mahomes has a nice gift waiting for him and Demarcus Robinson hauls it in. Beautiful work on Robinson’s part in every part of his route. This is a good example of how the design by the HC and the execution by a WR helps create a special play, one which shows more than just a quarterback’s strong-armed ability. Here’s a great breakdown of this play from Matt Waldman:

1:56 – Play Four: – Mahomes is in the Shotgun again and he executes a forward handoff to LeSean McCoy who sweeps to the left and gains three yards.

1:47 – Play Five: – From the Shotgun, Mahomes fades to his right, looks downfield, then throws back across the backfield to Damien Williams on a screen which he advances for a three yard gain. However, replacement LT, Cam Erving, is called for an “Illegal Block Above the Waist” so the play comes back and the Chiefs offense is Penalized 10 yards. The ball is placed at the Raiders 27 yard line.

1:46 – Oakland takes a time out (DL Clelin Ferrell was injured on the previous play).

1:41 – Play Six: – With Mahomes in the Shotgun, Travis Kelce is lined up just wide of the offensive linemen to the left, he takes a quick step outside and runs a screamer down the sideline catching the ball over his shoulder as he enters the end zone. Two defenders collide with Kelce and he does a double-clutch of the football and lands on his back on the infield dirt — for the last time — Touchdown Kan-Sas-City!

Kansas City 21, Oakland 10.

While there was plenty of game left to be played, stretching the lead to a double-score lead was important and changed the way the Raiders played the rest of the way. This score was followed up by another Demarcus Robinson TD just before the half. De’Anthony Thomas had received Oakland’s punt and returned it to their 39 yard line and it took Patrick Mahome all of one play to hit Demarcus Robinson for the games last score, 28-to-10, and, “That’s all,” she wrote.
