Chiefs: By the Bye

If I had told you that by the Bye Week the Kansas City Chiefs would be 5-and-0 and they were able to do that without the services of their starting RB, Isiah Pacheco, and without their #1 WR, Hollywood Brown, and their #1B WR, Rashee Rice… plus, QB extraordinaire, Patrick Mahomes has thrown as many INTs as he has TDs (6)… you’d likely have thought me as crazy or deranged. While it’s tough to believe that’s exactly where we are in the season, it’s a reality that may take some getting used to.

5-and-0, okay, now I’m used to it. Wow, that was fast, as I’m sure it will be for most of you. Beating the Ravens, Bengals, Chargers, Falcons, and Saints by a combined average score of 6.6 points per game tells the real story of this season… so far.

To get the numbers for the Chiefs Average Margin of Victory per game I divided the total Margin of Victory by the number (5) of games they have played so far. What is to be learned form this is… the K.C. defense is for real and the offense will have to continue to produce at least 25+ points per contest to have a chance of repeating as Super Bowl Champions. At least that’s my take.

Andy Reid

After the game Andy Reid addressed the lateral thrown by Travis Kelce to Samaje Perine.

Kareem Hunt

Kareem Hunt is 29 years old. Our RB — not named Isiah Pacheco — ran for more than 100 yards (102 to be exact) in this game vs the Saints and who would have thunk it? Andy Reid, it should be noted, called a great game, including a direct snap at the goal line to Travis Kelce who handed the ball to Xavier Worthy and he scored from 3.5 yards out on a right side sweep. here’s that play (0:09):

Worthy was raised by his mother who served as his mother and father so he immediately ran to make sure she got the ball. However, this section is mainly about Kareem Hunt, so here’s some of his highlights, like his TD from 5.5 yards out, which gave K.C. an early lead (0:36):

Hunt also had a reception giving him 117 total yards for the evening.

Money (Kareem Hunt)

Signed a $1.21 M deal with K.C. on September 16, just a few weeks ago. His fully guaranteed money = $0. To say Hunt is cheap deal for the Chiefs would be an understatement.

JuJu Smith-Schuster

JuJu is 27 years old and has become the replacement part for Rashee Rice and in this case — vs the Saints — he gained 130 yards on 7 receptions (on 8 targets), an 18.6 YPR average. Here’s JuJu’s 50 yard reception in which he seems to run for days and days in the open field (“Wide Open Spaces“… Anybody? Anybody?):

Money (JuJu Smith-Schuster)

The Chiefs will pay JuJu the $1.2 M, a vet minimum, and the New England Patriots… who released him in early August (then was signed by K.C. in late August)… will pay the remaining $7 M that he’s owed from his previous contract with them.

Rashee Rice Update

It looks like WR JuJu Smith-Schuster will be needed more this season. Dr. Jesse Morse, a Sports Medicine Physician out of Miami, says there’s good news for Rice that his ACL wasn’t torn badly enough to need surgery… but… his LCL — lateral collateral ligament (see below) — will need further attention this year and keep Rice out for months, at least:
