Chiefs Chatter, News, Moves, & Stuff That Matters, XI

As our Kansas City Chiefs wrapped up another week of OTAs, we cut a linebacker (who I honestly didn’t know we had), a cornerback who helped the Chiefs win the Super Bowl went North in search of greener (cha-ching) pastures, and the USFL’s Boston Breakers punter Dario Casarino’s record for most punts in a game (11) and record for most punting yards in a game (487) could be in jeopardy next year. BTW, it was the same game – Boston Breakers vs Chicago Blitz, June 6, 1983. The Breakers won 21-15.

Mahomes Sets Unrealistic Goal … For Any Other Team, That Is…

.

.

There was much ballyhooing and belly-aching when, earlier last week, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes casually mentioned his desired goal of 20-and-0 for the 2021 Chiefs campaign. Get over it! This was not trash-talking. Nor was it a braggadocios moment like Babe Ruth calling his shot, or Muhammad Ali predicting the round his opponent would go down, or even the New York Jets Willie Namath guaranteeing victory over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. It was just a man stating his goal and putting it out there for all to know. It’s an admirable goal. One I think is attainable, if we have the squad we think we do, escape the 17 game season relatively injury free, and the gridiron gods smile upon the Red and Gold.

.

.

After all, as former Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards pointed out for the oblivious when he was the head guy for the New York Jets,

.

“Hello! You play to win the game!”

CBS Sports’ 2021 Top 100 Players List Includes Six Chiefs

.

.

CBS Sports released their 2021 Top 100 Players list, and it included six Chiefs. They are:

.

  • 1. Patrick Mahomes, QB
  • 5. Travis Kelce, TE
  • 13. Tyreek Hill, WR
  • 30. Chris Jones, DE
  • 34. Tyrann Mathieu, FS
  • 100. L’Jarius Sneed, CB

.

Call me cocky, but I think when week 17 of the NFL 2021 season wraps up, CBS will have to add more Chiefs to that list. Two of which are a second-year running back, and a third-year safety.

Breezy Come, Breezy Go

Ex-Chief cornerback Bashaud Breeland signed with the Minnesota Vikings last week. The oft-penalized 29-year-old signed a one-year deal worth up to $4 million. The Vikings are Breeland’s fourth team in eight years.

.

.

Kamalei Who?

The Chiefs released veteran linebacker Kamalei Correa last week, less than a month after signing him.

Tennessee Titans: aka Chiefs Lite

So, the Tennessee Titans have nabbed the highly sought after disgruntled Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones. This season should be interesting.

Race-norming? Who Knew?

I never knew this was a thing, and when I first heard it, I thought it was referring to some pseudoscientific eugenics gibberish from 1924I. Boy, was I wrong! The United States government implemented race-norming just 40 years ago in 1981. 38 U.S. states’ employment services practiced race-norming.

.

.

The same US government banned race-norming just ten years after implementation with passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1991. Yet the NFL continued the practice.

As the Packers Panic

Welcome to another exciting episode of the NFL’s new hot drama As the Packer Panic. In this week’s episode, disenchanted Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was enjoying his post-Jeopardy life vacationing in Hawaii, while Packers president/CEO Mark Murphy finally stumbled on the realization that an unhappy Rodgers might be a problem and that it had “divided our fan base.” Perhaps Murphy should call Herm Edwards for help in figuring out the obvious.

.

.

Should the Denver Broncos pull off the impossible and miraculously snag the 37-year-old Rodgers, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes welcomes the challenge.

.

.

Will the renegade Rodgers show up for mandatory minicamp tomorrow? Will Murphy and the piddling Packers reach out to Wheel of Fortune’s Pat Sajak for a clue? (see what I did there) Will Rodgers strap on his skis and head to the Rockies where the Broncos roam all but quarterback-less? Will the Pack and Rodgers kiss and make up? Can this relationship be saved? Tune in next week, for another exciting episode of: “As the Packers Panic.”

Return of the USFL

“What I wouldn’t give to see the Memphis Showboats just one more time,” said no one, ever, but that’s not stopping Fox Sports from bringing the 37-year old defunct league back from the gridiron grave in the spring of 2022.

.

.

Methinks if the re-vamped USFL attempts to compete with the NFL, they will lose. Again. However, if they use it as a developmental league, much like NFL Europe was, I think it’s a win-win for both the NFL and the USFL. I hope this is the route they go. I’d love nothing more than to pen an improbable rag-to-riches story in the future about some Pro-Bowl Chief who got his start with the likes of the Oakland Invaders. 👹

Chiefs Quote of the Week

From Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo on recently veteran defensive tackle Jarran Reed:

.

“I remember when he was at Alabama, I have a good friend that actually trained him as he got ready for the combine. So we have a mutual friend — a coach I have a lot of respect for — and I’ve always liked him as a player, so I’m glad we got him. We’ve had him here a few days — and I texted him the other day. I just really like the way he handles himself here at practice. He’s serious about football, [but] he knows when to lighten it up. Right now, in the short amount of time I’ve had with him, I really love the personality, the attitude and what he gives us as a football player.”

Chiefs Blast from the Past

Argue if you like, but Bobby Bell was to Len Dawson, yesteryear, what Tyrann Mathieu is to Patrick Mahomes, today.

A Reason To Celebrate This Week

NATIONAL UPSY DAISY DAY – June 8

.

Tomorrow, June 8, brings us National Upsy Daisy Day. Established in 2003 by Stephanie West Allen, Upsy Daisy Day is, “A day to remind people to get up gloriously, gratefully, and gleefully.” Life is trife with strife along with the bumps and the bruises we all encounter each day. National Upsy Daisy Day affords us the opportunity to realize this, and to be grateful for the important things in life. Like family and friends, food to eat, clothes on our back, and a roof over our head.

A Smile To Start Your Week
