Last week, in the Disqus boards, Arrowhead One reader freshmeat62 opined, “These are the absolute dog days of the football season!” He’s right, too. Finding fodder for a weekly football column is akin to Sisyphus rolling that boulder up the hill in the dark depths of Hades.
.
In fact, Richard Sherman’s alcohol-fueled domestic violence meltdown last week, the repercussions of our own “Machine Gun Clarkie’s” Los Angeles County gun charges from last month, and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins’ wife going full “Mike Tyson” on him in a domestic violence altercation in Las Vegas, this weeks column reads more like a local newspaper’s police blotter than it does a football column, but, I digress.
.
Let’s get at it.

This Week In Chiefs News
Dog Days? Mahomes Can Throw A Little Shade Your Way
As if to underscore freshmeat62’s point about these being the dog days, of the NFL season, sports news pounced on an off-the-cuff remark Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes made when Los Angeles Chargers fan shouted out, “Watch out for Justin Herbert next year!”
.
Mahomes off-handedly retorted, “I’ll see it when I believe it.”
.
.
That was all it took to send sports media outlets in a tizzy… you know… dog days and all. They even had the audacity to make comparisons between Mahomes and Herbert. Come on, man! That’s like comparing bologna to filet mignon. Patrick Mahomes is the best QB in the NFL, right now. There is no comparison. Period.

It’s Patrick Mahomes II Day In Tyler, TX
Tyler, Texas Mayor Donald P. Warren officially proclaimed July 12, 2021, as Patrick L. Mahomes, II Day, and encouraged all Tyler citizens, “to celebrate the achievements and service of Patrick today and throughout the year.”
.
.
The South Tyler Rotary Club also honored the Chiefs QB with the Service Above Self award for his efforts with his 15 and the Mahomies Foundation that helps kids in his hometown of Whitehouse, TX, a well as Lubbock, TX and the Kansas City Metro.

Tony G – Coming Soon To A Theater Near You
Scuttlebutt has it that former Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez is leaving Fox Sports to pursue a career as an actor. The Hall of Famer already has several acting roles under his belt, including an appearance in the 2017 Vin Diesel movie xXx: Return of Xander Cage and a recurring role on the television show NCIS.
.
I honestly never thought I’d say this to a Chiefs tight end, but, “Break a leg, Tony.”

Elsewhere Around the League
Steelers QB Victim of Domestic Violence
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was involved in a domestic dispute with his wife, Kalabrya Gondrezick-Haskins, after an altercation inside the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas, NV, last week.
.
.
Police arrested Mrs. Gondrezick-Haskins, who’s facing felony charges, after she allegedly punched Haskins in the mouth. Police found a piece of a tooth in the bedroom, and Haskins required stitches for a split lip. It’s reported that Haskins “would most certainly require dental work to repair his teeth.”
.
Kudos to Haskins for not retaliating and knowing that: a real man does not hit women. I’m hoping the best for the couple.

Things do not look good in Packerland. Seems Rodgers just wants out of Green Bay.

Sherman’s Meltdown
Last Wednesday, Washington State King County police arrested free-agent cornerback, Richard Sherman, after he allegedly crashed his vehicle into a construction zone along a busy Seattle suburb highway and attempted to break in to his his in-laws’ home, east of Seattle. Sherman’s children and his wife, Ashley Sherman, were in the home.
.
.
King County prosecutors charged Sherman with five misdemeanors:
- trespassing in the second degree,
- malicious mischief in the third degree,
- resisting arrest,
- driving while under the influence and,
- reckless endangerment of roadway workers.
.
Sherman faces up to 90 days in jail, or gross misdemeanors, punishable by up to one year. Sherman, accompanied by his wife, pleaded not guilty to all charges in King County District Court on Friday.
.
.
Sherman apologized after being release without bond, issuing a statement on Instagram,
.
“I am deeply remorseful for my actions on Tuesday night. I behaved in a manner I am not proud of. I have been dealing with some personal challenges over the last several months, but that is not an excuse for how I acted. The importance of mental and emotional health is extremely real and I vow to get the help I need. I appreciate all of the people who have reached out in support of me and my family, including our community here in Seattle. I am grateful to have such an amazing wife, family and support system to lean on during this time.” –Richard Sherman
.
I’ve listened to the 911 audio, as well as saw video footage of Sherman trying to break into his in-laws house. Both are equally disturbing as they are terrifying. As such, we’ve chosen not to include them in this article.
.
I believe Richard Sherman is a good man. He let alcohol and personal demons get the better of him that night. He’ll rightfully have to deal with the legal ramifications, but has also pledged to get the help he needs to help battle the personal demons that led up to the night’s events. I wish he and his family only the best going forward.

Chiefs Player Tweet of the Week
.
Neither can we, Mr. Mahomes. Neither can we.
.
Chiefs Fan Tweet of the Week
I had almost forgotten what a magical season the Chiefs had in 2019. Let’s do it again this year.
.
.
Chiefs Quote of the Week
This week’s quote of the week is a two-fer from a pair of Chiefs itching to get the sour taste of last season’s Super Bowl loss out of their mouths.
.
“That was pretty embarrassing, man … I want to go win one more than I ever wanted to get one in the first place.” – Chiefs TE Travis Kelce
.
.
“I’ve been grinding my tail off, man, ever since that loss … I feel like we was kind of embarrassed on national TV during the biggest game.” – Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill
.
Chiefs Blast from the Past
In honor of the anniversary of his passing last week, our Chiefs Blast from the Past is the fearsome Buck Buchanan.
.
.
Random Chiefs Statistic of the Week
Methinks they give Tom Brady for too much credit. I think he should be on the right-hand side of the Quarterback Rankings chart.
.
.
.
Dad Joke of the Week
My twin brother called me from prison.
He said, “Hey, you know how we always finish each other’s sentences?”
.
.
A Reason To Celebrate This Week
.
This coming Saturday, Americans will celebrate National Tequila Day. It’s a well-earned day of celebration, as the spirit is likely a major factor in why 10% of our population is even here, today!
.
A Smile To Start Your Week
This. Just this.
