Chiefs: Counting the “Bests”

No, that’s not meant to say “Beasts” as I’m referring to all the organizational bests the Kansas City Chiefs currently have. When you consider all the bests in the nation and they work for Clark Hunt, you have to give him his due. Even though he graded out pretty low — actually he got an F- from the NFLPA survey — but on the other hand he handed out more than 700 Super Bowl rings and that’s saying something!

Since Clark Hunt hired Andy Reid over ten years ago, and it’s Reid who has brought everyone up to a performance level unheard of in the NFL until now…

Andy Reid

It’s hard not to think of Andy Reid as the best coach in the NFL. He’s taken his teams to the Super Bowl in 4 of the last five seasons and come out on top in 3 of those games.

One of the aspects Reid is known for is his play designs and usage. He is also known for taking great advantage of his players talents. Reid makes the Best of the Best list for sure.

Patrick Mahomes

I’m sure that many expected to find Mahomes name at the top of this list, of course. Mahomes is the best of the best in many ways, in fact he may be the best of all time (GOAT). Mahomes has also been touted as part of the best HC-QB Duo. In an article written by Jordan Foote for si.com called, “Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes Ranked as NFL’s Best Head Coach-QB Duo” he siad:

“It’s no surprise that coming off consecutive Super Bowl titles, the league’s top team is seeing some credit shown to its top leaders. Together, the duo of Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes has helped take the football world by storm since Mahomes became Kansas City’s full-time starter in 2018. Dating back to that season, no club has reached or approached the heights of the Chiefs.”

Mahomes has taken the whole league by storm and his connection with HC Andy Reid has been one of the best of all time.

Travis Kelce

Some have suggested that Travis Kelce is now the face of the NFL. If it’s not Patrick Mahomes, I can’t think of a better choice. Kelce has had 7 straight seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards and last year wasn’t one of them. There has never been a Tight End with at least three 1,000 receiving yard seasons so that tells you just how great his career has been. Already… and it’s not done yet. Those TEs who have had 4 such one-thousand yard seasons include: Rob Gronkowski, Jason Witten, Tony Gonzalez, and George Kittle, but none of them have had their 1,000 yard seasons in a row like Kelce and he’s done it 7 times in a row. Kelce has become a celebrity beyond his football status, and par to fh reason is not only his podcast with brother Jason, but because of his standing relationship with the most popular person on the planet, Taylor Swift.

Creed Humphrey

Ever since Rodney Hudson and Matt Morse were Offensive Cneter’s who walked away in free agency, many fans have assumed the Chiefs would do the same with Creed Humphrey. There’s also those who think it’s between RG Trey Smith and OC Creed Humphrey and that in that case Trey Smith wins out.

Offensive Centers are traditionally the lowest paid position along the offensive line. That means it would be harder to re-sign Trey Smith than Creed Humphrey. With OC Jason Kelce of the Eagles retiring this offseason, Humphrey becomes the odds-on favorite to hold the best Center in the game title. Who the Chiefs decide to re-sign is beyond me, but my bet is on Humphrey. He’s the best in the game today without a doubt.

Chris Jones

Now that Aaron Donald has retired, there is little competition for Chris Jones as the best Defensive Tackle in the game today.

While some may argue, there is little doubt that Stone Cold Jones is one of the best to ever play hte Defensive Tackle position. Jones is sure to point out that Steve Spagnuolo is one of the best to ever be the DC in the game:

Steve Spagnuolo

With Steve Spagnuolo now winning four Super Bowls as a Defensive Coordinator, some not only thing he deserves a shot as a head coach again, but he should certainly be counted as one of he best DC’s going:

Talking about the Best to ever do it… the Chiefs need to consider what DBs coach Dave Merritt has done:

Dave Merritt

Merritt is now a 5 time Super Bowl Champion. Merritt was not only an assistant for Steve Spgnuolo with the Giants teasm that beat the Patriots but has now won three rings with the Chiefs (0:05).

The Chiefs may have let the best CB in the NFL — L’Jarius Sneed — slip away in free agency too.

Dave Toub

I’m with Peter Schrager on this one. Dave Toub is the best Special Team’s Coach in the NFL. Period.

How Andy Reid finagled him away from the Chicago Bears when he came to K.C., I’ll never know. Toub has long been considered one of the best, and now I believe he is the outright best Special Teams coordinator.

While I believe the Chiefs also have others who are the best, they are at a minimum, second best. Like Harrison Butker. I may not agree with his personal policies, but his play on the field is nearly unrivaled. Or how about the Chiefs announcer, Mitch Holthus? He has to be one of he best, if not the outright best, in the game today?! Then there’s the Chiefs LB coach, Brendan Daly. He has 6 Super Bowl rings now and everywhere he’s gone he’s succeeded, and he’s only 48 years old.

Brett Veach

While Veach may be one of the youngest GMs in any sport today, he could also be the best. He’s not only had a hand in bringing Patrick Mahomes to the Chiefs, but he’s won three Super Bowl rings in his short stint with the Chiefs.

I’ don’t know if Mark Donovan deserves to be mentioned here, but I’m going to do it anyway. Donovan knows his role and has now been around long enough to win three rings with the Chiefs (1:01):
