Chiefs: Day Two of Pads

Laddie Morse

The Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver who was hurt a few days ago, was seen out on the field taking passes from the jug machine.

Now, his prognosis is, he’s “day-to-day.” That’s incredibly good news as the WR room is not the best in the league. Certainly, Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback, but the WR room… it has it’s needs. The good news on Watson means the Chiefs likely have four locks at the position in: Hollywood Brown, Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice and then Justin Watson. There are a host of others who will continue to be battling it out for what appears to be the last two positions.

KT was seen going to the ground after being hit during this padded training camp day on Saturday.

I outlined yesterday that the Chiefs were using Kadarius Toney as a RB. He’s had some success at the RB position before so Andy Reid and company thought they’d try him there since he kept getting hurt at WR and he couldn’t be relied upon there:

By moving KT to RB, he’s going to get hit more. Doesn’t it seem possible that KT will be even less reliable as a RB than he is as a WR? It’s not like he has a Tyreek Hill body which is much thicker. I bring Hill up because Hill started his career as a RB and that’s how he was used in college. If the Chiefs plan for KT is to move him to RB and give him some occasional WR snaps too, then I’m not so sure how long he’s going to last on this team. Or, in the league.

Kingsley Suamataia is the starter. For now. He’s had two less than stellar days there now that the Pads have come on. He plays good on one play… then not so good on the next. Here he is going against George Karlaftis (0:18):

Here, he is takes one bad… then one good… rep against Mike Danna (0:09):

Some don’t feel as much reticence as I do about Kingsley Suamataia and here’s Ryan Tracy of RGR Football talking about yesterday’s reps (1:00):

Of course, Suamataia is a very good run blocker, but that’s not the issue here. Kingdom fans want to know if the Left Tackle can protect Patrick Mahomes on a consistent basis. Here’s Kingsley Suamataia, #76, run blocking for RB Deneric Prince for a left side sweep (0:12):

Mike Caliendo is substituting for Joe Thuney at LG while he’s recovering from a pectoral injury which caused him to miss the most recent Super Bowl. Once Thuney comes back — although, both David Bell and I think it will take a year for him to fully recover — the Chiefs IOL will once again be the best in the NFL. In the meantime, we’ve got Caliendo. He’s pretty darned good too. Caliendo had 64 offensive snaps in 2023.

BTW, the Chiefs first preseason game, which is against the Jags, in Jacksonville, is now only 13 days away, on Saturday, August 10, at 6:00 PM CDT. Chiefs Training Camp resumes tomorrow at 9:15 AM CDT and their next day off is this coming up on Tuesday. WRs and TEs will be signing autographs today.

Summary

While I’ve covered the three main areas of concerns, that being: the WRs, the RBs and the LT positions, I will add that the second RB position doesn’t appear to be as secure as I originally thought. Deneric Prince may be over taking Clyde Edwards-Helaire. He’s been getting many more snaps and even had some with the first team, snaps that normally (whatever the H that is?) would go to the second RB, in order. So, once again, we’ll have to wait and see once the Preseason games begin.
