Two days after the Chiefs lost a heartbreaker at home to the New England Patriots, they have cut ties with the team’s defensive coordinator of the past 6 years: Bob Sutton. Sutton had become the target of many people as the reason for the Chiefs failure to succeed. However the Andy Reid hires to be his new DC will be in a both a hot seat and the cat bird’s seat as he will get to board the Patrick Mahomes train bound for glory.
Over the course of the past few days, the #Chiefs have talked with players and coaches about defensive coordinator Bob Sutton, whose lack of adjustments has been a non-stop frustration. They moved on today, and a prime job is open.

“Prime job” is one way to describe it but there will also be pressure to produce right away. With the offense leading the league in scoring the defensive coordinator must work to balance the clock because the Chiefs offense can score so quickly.
Had to happen. Bob Sutton is a good man, and smart coach, but the time had come. He's taken a lot of abuse the last few years and handled it with class. The NFL is about results, so people don't care about that stuff as much, but it should be said. I'll miss talking with him.

You may not like the decision… or like it a lot… but either way, it should not be because Dee Ford lined up in the neutral zone. However, I do understand that if Ford had not lined up there, the Chiefs woudl be in the Super Bowl right now adn the Sutton firing would not have happened this offseason at all.
The New York Times has an article out suggesting that Rex Ryan could be the Chiefs new DC. I’m not one to favor that choice as Ryan is too much of his own man. Names that are rumored to be available include: Dennis Allen from the Saints, John Pagano, and Steve Spagnuolo.
Here’s a name to watch for the now vacant Chiefs’ DC job, per sources: former Jets and Bills’ HC and current ESPN analyst Rex Ryan, who has been approached about other DC openings in recent seasons.

Whoever the Chiefs will find to take the position will be intriguing but I hope it’s not a promotion from within. The CHiefs need some new blood to add to the mix and making a new association with a new body, helps to connect the organization with players that would not have been considered any other way.
Let’s hope this next coach is around for years to come. Go Chiefs!
