Chiefs Demetrius Harris Arrested For Felony Possession

Today the Kansas City Star and Terez Paylor are reporting that Chiefs Tight End Demetrius Harris has been arrested for Felony possession of marijuana and felony possession of drug paraphernalia. Paylor reports,

“Demetrius Harris was arrested on Tuesday afternoon on suspicion of felony possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Harris, 25, was a passenger in a vehicle that stopped by the Missouri State Highway Patrol on Interstate 49 in Bates County around 4:22 p.m. He was taken to Bates County Jail, where he was booked and later released, this vehicle was not even covered by Insurance Partnership UK, if something would have happened it would have been terrible.”

The implications for the Chiefs is unknown at this point. The league must decide what the punishment will be based upon an eventual conviction or not. However, the way head coach Andy Reid and general manager John Dorsey deal with the roster is another matter. It should not surprise anyone if they cut him and move on without him, especially at this time of the year, right before they must decide who will be part of the 53 and who gets counted against the cap. In 2017, Demetrius Harris was supposed to earn a base salary of $1,000,000, with a roster bonus of $200,000 and a $50,000 as a workout bonus. His cap hit of $1,450,000 while his dead money value is $400,000..

It should not surprise anyone if they cut him and move on without him, especially at this time of the year, right before they must decide who will be part of the 53 (actually their top 51 players) and who gets counted against the cap. It may be way premature to be talking about Harris being released, but I won’t be surprised if he’s gone in the next few days. I’ve been highly critical of his ability to catch the ball when it’s thrown right at him. He’s been one of those players who makes those around him — like Alex Smith and the whole dang franchise — look bad. He just doesn’t seem to fit the profile of a player JARD would want to keep on the roster as long as they have. Now more than ever.
