Chiefs Down Browns, Bills Heading To Town

Chiefs Down Browns, Bills Heading To Town – Man, what a ride! As a 50 plus year-old dude, I can’t ever do that, again! I yelled at the TV, scared the dogs, and had Mrs. Rose threatened to call the police on me at least four times–1st quarter, 2nd quarter, 3rd quarter, and 4th quarter… but, we won! Sheesh! What a wild ride.

We started the game smoking! We scored back-to-back touchdowns on our first two drives and got points in our first four possessions. Mahomes, despite being pulled in the third quarter due to concussion, had 255 yards and two touchdowns. Despite the strong Browns defense, the Chiefs were handling business.

The real Chiefs, that is the Chiefs we know we are, came through in the second half of the game. Our leader, our quarterback, our hero, our ace — Patrick Mahomes — was ruled out of the game in the third quarter. The clock read 7:44 left in that quarter and the Browns were looking spiffy, thanks to an early third quarter touchdown drive that cut our lead down to just nine points.

Enter, backup Chiefs quarterback Chad Henne. Sure, he threw an interception in the end zone, but, for the sake of this article, I’m glossing right by it. It was Henne and his Chiefs teammates who shutdown the Browns momentum and converted a 4th-and-1 attempt that helped the Chiefs advance the score to 22-10. The Browns would get another touchdown prior to games end, but the Chiefs stood fast, as the Chiefs are wont to do.

Final score? Chiefs 22, Browns 17.

Stat of the Game

Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce join the company of ex-Chiefs Ed Podolak and Elmo Wright as the only Chiefs teammates to each have 100+ rec yards in the same playoff game.

Quote of the Game

“He’s doing great right now, which is a real positive as we looked at this. He passed all the deals he needed to pass. So we’ll see where it goes from here.”

Reid’s “Flinching” Postgame Comment

“Somewhere you’ve got to be able to reach deep in tough times and pull that out. And if the coaches are flinching, if the players — your leaders — are flinching, it’s not going to happen. And our locker room is not going to flinch. They’re tough that way.”

… and the Game Ball Goes to …

Chad Henne. I forgive his boneheaded 4th quarter interception in the end zone. So should you. Henne came through! I know, I pushed for Matt Moore to be our backup. I stand by that, still, but, Henne? If I weren’t already, you’d make me want to be a Chief!

After Chad Henne brought the Chiefs to within inches of a first down… here’s the design and the play that brought the third AFC Championship game to Arrowhead in a row (over the past three seasons).

Looking Ahead

We will avenge the savage hit on Chiefs quarterback Joe Montana from decades ago. For shame, Buffalo… for shame! Vengeance shall be ours!

Parting Shots

I promised a great friend, and an unfortunate Browns fan, that I’d make mention of him should the Chiefs lose. He’s a cool guy and I want to make sure I do him a solid. You can follow @BillyGEdwardsch on Twitter and peek at his blog, too if you like. I hope our quarterback — Oh, Captain, My Captain! — is back in the fold, and I think he will be, but, even if not, Big Red schemes things of which we can’t fathom to dream. He’s a scary dude. Glad he’s on our side!
