The first day of the 2018 NFL Draft has come and gone and the Kansas City Chiefs were not involved. Many had speculated, including Brett Veach, the Chiefs GM, that if there was a player they liked, then the team would trade up to the end of the first round. Since day one only covers the first round, the Chiefs were left sitting on the sidelines.
However, today at 6:00 PM Central Standard time this evening, rounds 2 and 3 will take place and the Chiefs will be picking at #54, #78 and #86. So, let’s take a peek at who is gone and who is still available. Here are all the players who were drafted on Thursday evening:
Now let’s take a look at who is still available.
There are plenty more prospects than listed here. However, this list is mostly meant to show players who the Chiefs might take at #54. Since DT Harrison Phillips, in blue, is someone who I consider a first round talent — and surprise, he’s still available — I have listed him here as my highest priority prospect, in blue. Does that mean the Chiefs will value him like I do. Not at all but, he could fix a glaring weakness right away if Brett Veach makes the to select him. OC James Daniels and OG Will Hernandez are also first round talents, as far as I’m concerned so, I placed them here at the top of this list. If the Chiefs select them it will only be because they’ve fallen far below where they should have been picked and may be too hard to pass on such value. However, I will be upset that the Chiefs didn’t try to move around and take a defensive prospect if that happens.
All other prospects listed in red above are not only available but would make great first picks. Would I recommend that the Chiefs move up to snag one of these guys? No… but if they’re all gone by the time the Chiefs pick I’ll probably change my mind about that.
The players bolded in black at the bottom of column one and the top of column two would also make excellent additions to the Chiefs and hopefully one or two will be left to draft by pick #78, the Chiefs second pick. These prospects are not listed in any kind of order of preference or skill level… for the most part. Just preference.
Yes, there were some surprises on the first day of the draft. Namely, Baker Mayfield going #1 and then Lamar Jackson falling to #32. I was actually very happy to see a total of 5 QBs go in the first round because it means those players will displace other quality position players thereby pushing them down to where the Chiefs will pick. The highlight of the draft was watching the once paralyzed Ryan Shazier walk across the stage and up to the podium then read the selection for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Had to hold back the tears.
Are there prospects I may have left off the list? Please let me know below. Which players are you hoping the Chiefs will select off the lists I’ve provided? Here’s the schedule for the next two days:
- April, 27, 6:00 PM CST:
- Round 2-3: NFL Network, FOX Sports, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Deportes
- April, 28, 11:00 AM CST:
- Round 4-7: NFL Network, ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Deportes
Hope you enjoyed the first day of the draft. See you tonight!
