Chiefs: Everybody Loves A Parade

Laddie Morse

It’s officially called the: “Chiefs Kingdom Champions Parade” and today (Wednesday) is that day! Many are calling it a “Red Snow Day.” So, what happens when you give a city like Kansas City a chance to celebrate as a community? They close their schools. Why? Because many students and teachers will be calling in sick anyway! I should know, I have grand-kids in Lee’s Summit (they wanted the Chiefs to win mostly because they’d get a day off). It’s not just public schools closing their doors on Wednesday either, it includes colleges: like Kansas City, Kansas, Community College and Metropolitan Community Colleges. Here’s a listing of public schools closings (including colleges):

From sportskc.org/cheifsparade.com:

.

“PARADE: Kicks off at 12:00 pm at 6th Street and Grand Blvd, heading south on Grand Blvd, west on Pershing Road, north on Main, culminating at Union Station.  The parade will last approximately 1.5 hours.

RALLY: Begins at approximately 1:45 pm in front of Union Station and the National WWI Museum and Memorial north lawn. The Rally will last approximately 1 hour.”

Parade Weather Report

You may recall the 18° degree weather on February 4th in 2020 and everyone was freezing. Today’s weather should be much more delightful. It may start out in the high 30s, but the parade will be in the 40s throughout.

.

.

The Chiefs Super Bowl Parade attendance in 2020 was between 800,000 people and one Million (see below). With the weather being much more cooperative, you can figure that many more people will be in attendance. Consequently, if you really want to get to a spot and be able to be near the action (the players) you might want to get there early. Especially when it comes to parking.

Important Notes

Road closures on the parade route have already begun –> on Tuesday, February 14, at noon.

Union Station has closed (to public access) beginning on Tuesday, February 14 at 10:00 pm.

Traffic running east and west of Grand Blvd will be closed between Walnut & McGee from the Berkley Riverfront on the north to Pershing Road on the south. Street closures are effective beginning at noon Tuesday, February 14.

Pedestrian Crossings on Grand will be available at 9th Street, 13th Street, Truman Road, 18th Street and 20th street.

There will be significant travel delays on Wednesday. Drivers should use alternate routes and allow for extra time when traveling in the area.
