Chiefs Exploit the Chargers, 31 to 17

Laddie Morse

The Kansas City Chiefs won the toss and it was all down hill from there for the Los Angeles Chargers. The Bolts came to town to make sure they didn’t lose their 4th game in this young season (but did anyway) and couldn’t stay with the Chiefs in the second half. The score at halftime was 24-to-17 Chiefs and the Chargers Head Coach, Brandon Staley, said at the half that they would have to cover Travis Kelce closer and get some pass rush going. Well, since they had no sacks in the first half, getting one in the third quarter appeared — at the time — that it might help. In the long run, the Chargers were held scoreless in the second half and K.C. scored on a short pass to Isiah Pacheco, who quickly dodged one of the Chargers’ defenders and that was the game (0:28).

The game of angst for fans came in two parts. One was the first three quarters when the Chief kept going ahead by one score, then finally hit it was the above Pop TD and the men from L.A. were faced with making two scores up just to tie the game. By then, the men in red and gold had the game under control and were able to pin their ears back and rush Justin Herbert, the Chargers QB, and did eventually force an INT… which I predicted late in the game (see the thread following the article: “Chargers at Chiefs: OPEN THREAD”).

I also predicted that the Chiefs would win this game 34-to-20 which was fairly close to the final score of 31-to-17.

Player of the Game

This has to be Travis Kelce. Yes, he had his girlfriend, Taylor Swift, in the booth with Patrick Mahomes wife, Brittany Mathews, but it was not for that reason at all. Kelce had 12 receptions on 13 targets for 179 receiving yards. This also included 1 TD an average of 14.9 yards per reception and a long catch of 53 yards… so there was plenty to cheer about for his GF Taylor Swift. HC Andy Reid said after the game when realizing that Travis Kelce had a huge game said, “She can stay around all she wants.” Ditto the coaches sentiments.

Kelce has 525 receiving yards for the year so far and if you project that out, he’ll end up with 1,275 yards this season. Since Kelce already has the record for 1,000 yard+ season in a row with 7… an 8th year of 1,000+ seasons in a row should stand for quite some time, especially when you consider that the second best TE with 1,000+ season is Rob Gronkowski, Jasen Witten, and Tony Gonzalez… but none of them did it in consecutive seasons like Kelce (1:01).

Quote of the Game

“[Drue] Tranquill sacking his former teams

quarterback is a wonderful sight to see.”

Kylie Winfrey

Yep, both Mike Edwards, a Tampa Bay transplant and Drue Tranquill, formerly of the Chargers, played great in this game.

Patrick Mahomes may have passed for loads of yards — 424 to be exact — but there were also throws that he missed. Especially long throws like the one to Skyy Moore down the right sideline. I don’t want to be a “spoiled” Chiefs fan because of Mahomes, but even he would tel you, “I could have played better.”

WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling (MVS) scored the Chiefs first TD to give the Chiefs a 10-to-3 lead(1:03):

Willie Gay had a very good game and was “up” as usual after the game (0:19):

Mitchell Schwartz may have it wrong… EVERY team plays the Chiefs like it’s their Super Bowl.

Thankfully, Nick Bolton — who left the field late in the game — doesn’t have a broken wrist, it’s a dislocation.
