Chiefs Fans: Oh, the Places You’ll Go! – Long gone are the days that us football fans got our news much differently and much more sparsely than we do now. We had the sports section of your daily newspaper that we read daily (it was best on Sunday) and religiously. We also were privy to five minutes of sports coverage each evening on the local news. On Sunday, game day, we had a 30-minute segment — CBS and their NFL Today, with Brent Musburger, Irv Cross, and Phyllis George was the best. The addition of Monday Night Football in 1970, with ‘Dandy’ Don Meredith, the irascible Howard Cosell, and Hall-of-Famer Frank Gifford was heaven sent for us football fans.
While this worked well for the times, it was never enough for a staunch football fans, particularly a Chiefs fan. If you were a Chiefs fan not living in Kansas City. Those five minutes each evening rarely, if ever, mentioned the Chiefs. The local newspaper rarely had anything about the game, save the box score. Come Sunday, you watched only those games that CBS, NBC, or ABC dictated what you watched. I would add that you had to walk two miles uphill both ways to do it, but I’m not yet my father. Although I fear it’s not far off.
Enter Cable TV and the internet. Everything has changed. You have sports networks like ESPN and the like, and the NFL even has their very own network. The internet? You can get what you want, when you want it, 24/7. Chiefs Fans, Oh the Places You’ll Go!
I’ll not get to in-depth with that here. These websites are no brainers for even pedestrian Chiefs fans. Both nfl.com, the official website for the National Football League, and chiefs.com, our own Kansas City Chiefs official website, are always your go to sources for both NFL and Chiefs-related information, however, bias abounds. You’ll read not much dissent nor anything negative regarding the NFL or the Chiefs. We must expect such from those whose job is to put their best face forward for our their fan base. Regardless of their partiality, they are the foremost site for NFL and Chiefs news. Both are well-worthy of daily reviews.
Next up, we have the sports network sites. ESPN, The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, along with the various Kansas City radio stations and TV stations, and the Kansas City Star… all give us what we want, when we want, although sometimes one-sided. All too often, when visiting these, we are subject to insanity, stupidity, and flat-out ignorance (yes, Colin Cowherd, Jason Whitlock, and Skip Bayless: I’m talking about all of you).
Introducing… Chief fan sites. There are plenty out there, all easily accessible. Each one has talented writers who, not only provide breaking news, they give us outstanding insight on both our team and our team’s players who have both earned and deserve our devotion. I’m speaking of sites like ArrowheadAddict, ArrowheadPride, Chiefs Crowd, KC Kingdom, Chiefs Wire, and Arrowhead Guys. There are plenty of others, too. While it may seem weird that we would include our competitor’s sites, we are, in the words of Mr. Morse (editor-in-chief here at ArrowheadOne),
“I don’t mind mentioning competing websites at all. My thinking is… by listing a link, our readers can go there then come back to AO to discuss. I wouldn’t be so blind as to think ours is the only Chiefs content everyone reads anyway… hopefully, just one of the best… as well as the best place to discuss all things Chiefs.”
Besides, while all Chiefs fans are awesome, a knowledgeable, well-informed Chiefs fan base makes for an even stronger Chiefs Kingdom.
Another great source to get NFL and Chiefs news is Reddit. There are two subreddits imperative for NFL and Chiefs news and discourse. Both are worthy of perusal, but tread softly, Chiefs Kingdom, the language is unfiltered and oft-times, those that disagree with you are down-right brutal in their rebuttals. Reddit is not the forum for the thin-skinned or those easily offended.
There also exists subreddits for all the other teams in the league, including the Los Angeles Chargers, the Denver Broncos, and the Las Vegas Raiders. I’m proud to say due to a few (maybe dozens) of my posts, I’m banned from them all. Not to brag, but I’m also banned from the New England Patriots, the Houston Texans, and the Baltimore Ravens subreddits, too. It hardly hurts my feelings … after all, a Chiefs fan must represent, and trollin’ ain’t easy!
Facebook also affords us Chiefs news, posts, and parley. Like Reddit, Facebook is not for the faint of heart. While I engage in a number of Facebook subgroups, I have a few favs. For Chiefs fans whom seek lively discussion of the league, overall, The Fifty Yard-Line is my go-to. Much of the posts hit as hard as they ring true. A tiff or two might occur. Fun reading and following for fans of all teams.
My absolute number one Chiefs Facebook group is CHIEFS DieHards4Life {Kc>. The passion of these Chiefs fans is unmatched elsewhere on the web. The group assures us that “in the end were all a bunch of DIEHARDS 4LIFE,” and they deliver. Hardly a day passes that there’s not a post or two where I’ve felt inclined to opine, or a link shared that I feel compelled to follow.
Other Facebook groups which may interest Chiefs Kingdom include:
A multitude of other such sites exist, too. The truth is, Chiefs Kingdom: seek and ye shall find.
Twitter also provides us an endless source of Chiefs news from the unlikeliest sources, such as Arrowheads Abroad@KCChiefs_UK, which accurately bills itself as the International Kansas City Chiefs Fan Club. They even have a website, ArrowheadsAbroad, to boot!
You can also follow NFL and Chiefs writer’s Twitter accounts, such as one of my favorites, NBC Writer and the author of Football Morning in America, @Peter_King. Or, perhaps, another preferred writer of mine, @adamteicher.
The neatest thing about Twitter for me, though, is that we get to hear from the players themselves. Like the rest of their peers in the NFL, most Chiefs players have Twitter accounts and are not averse to using them. They are golden. My personal favorites are:
There are other sources of info, too, including blast-from-the-past videos, and detailed breakdowns of the Chiefs on YouTube, trendy videos from younger Chiefs fans on TikTok, along with great podcasts dedicated solely to our beloved Chiefs.
With all these different sources of Chiefs information out there, you would think another one, namely ArrowheadOne, would be overkill. You’d be wrong. Much like Chiefs GM Brett Veach and HC Andy Reid have amassed a diverse collection of talented, dedicated players… so to has ArrowheadOne editor-in-chief, Laddie Morse, assembled a divergent corps of part-time scribes from across the nation and all walks of life. All the ArrowheadOne writers share a penchant for prose and a fervent love of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Four years ago last Friday (July 3rd), ArrowheadOne has brought Chiefs Kingdom a fresh story every day, rain or shine, holiday or none. Chiefs fans are sure to have a crisp, provocative, and simulating story to ponder over and enjoy with their first cup of coffee for the day.
We have the stallworth’s, such as Ransom Hawthorne, Laddie Morse, Paul Pulley, and myself. Ransom is the guy who brought us an insightful story — Chiefs Unicorns — as to those Chiefs who have yet to fill their role as Chiefs, yet have promise to do so. Laddie gave us The Chiefs Fire Workiest Moments of the 2019 Season on the 4th of July, when our nation was lacking of them whilst in the throes of a pandemic.
Paul is always on fire with his thought-provoking pieces and made many a Chiefs fan ponder what might be with his latest piece: “A Trade in the Works” teasing a trade possibility between Chiefs and the Jets: Chris Jones for Jamal Adams.
But, wait, there’s more! Added to the ArrowheadOne team are three new contemporary voices who love the Chiefs as much as any of us and show promise to provide the insight to engage and make us think whilst we start our days. I speak of no other than of David Beck, Alan Haupt and James McGregor. Each of their initial pieces show they have both the scribing skills and command of the Chiefs organization to keep us tuning in to ArrowheadOne for years to come.
While the stories themselves are more than enough “milkshake” to bring “all the boys to the yard,” a spirited, lively, active, ArrowheadOne Disqus forum makes the experience that much better. Take a look below the article and see for yourselves.
As we anxiously await the start of the Chiefs 2020 campaign, ArrowheadOne seeks to continue to provide a family-friendly site (monitored cursing and trolling) for Chiefs fans of all ages to enjoy. Fresh and unique ideas are now being brought to fruition, even while you read this. In the coming months, look for a new writer or two, more Chiefs tales of lore and legend, comprehensive breakdowns and analysis of games gone by, as well as games yet to come. Perhaps a quiz specifically designed to stump a certain ArrowheadOne reader, No, I’m not necessarily pointing an elbow at you, Bert. The Chiefs 2020 draft class promises to be fodder for feed, as do the perennial All-Pros that brought Mr. Lombardi’s trophy back to One Arrowhead Way this past February.
Yes, Chiefs fans, the best is yet to come. Oh, the Places We’ll Go!
