Chiefs Fantastic “Feasts”
and Where to Find Them
It’s magic really. Every time I get to watch a Kansas City Chiefs game, I am thankful. Ransom Hawthorne started this Thanksgiving day off right by getting us to ponder those individual Chiefs who we’re grateful for. That got me thinking about the many wonderful plays the Chiefs have made this season and so this piece is dedicated to those plays in “Fantastic ‘Feasts’ and Where to Find Them.”
The first feast… err… “play,” that comes to mind was Alex Smith’s option dive into the end zone in Overtime of the Chiefs opener against the San Diego Chargers giving them a big win. Of course, what made that better than mashed potatoes and gravy was that he had amazed everyone by bringing the team back from a 24-to-3 deficit, first to tie it up, then win it in extra time. If this season was a Thanksgiving dinner, Alex Smith started the season off by toasting to, then roasting, the San Diego Chargers!
If Alex Smith’s end zone leap was the toast of the town then the dressing (stuffing) was the 8 turnovers against the Jets. Now, I’m not talking window-dressing here because turkey dressing is my favorite food in the Milky Way… and yes, I’ve been around the galaxy a few times. Enough to know that eight, ocho, acht, huit, 8… that’s right, eight… turnovers is unfathomable. That’s two turnovers per quarter. The Jets only had the ball 10 times in that game and only two times the Chiefs didn’t force a turnover. Now that’s the full meal deal! By the way, Mister Marcus Peters had two interceptions in the game!
It’s always delicious when the Chiefs beat the Raiders but with Alex Smith completing 19 of 22 passes including long passes of 38,30, 26, 21, 16, 13,12 and 11 it was like second helpings when you’re not feeling too full to enjoy it. Rookie sensation Tyreek Hill added a 50-yard punt return, Mister Marcus Peters added another one to his interception collection and the Chiefs defense kept the Raiders QB Derek Carr frustrated all day, holding them to 10 points.
Maybe Alex Smith should play the New Orleans Saints more. His 126.0 QB Rating topped future Hall of Famer Drew Brees and Daniel Sorenson’s 48-yard pick-six made every Chiefs fan happier than Matthieu Ricard (presumably the happiest man in the world). However, Alex Smith had to sit down because of some vicious… and questionable… hits to the head. But then Nick Foles came in and did well enough to make Alex haters try and start a QB controversy. It didn’t work. In any event, three fumbles and an INT did the Saints in and it was good to see the Saints go marching out without a victory. More feasting for Chiefs fans.
I have to mention maybe my favorite victory of the year… the Chiefs 30-to-14 pounding of the Colts in Indianapolis no less. This was “just desserts” for sure because the Colts have been responsible for some of the Chiefs playoff pain in years past so, giving them a good thrashing in their own backyard was semi-special. Tastier than apple pie with homemade vanilla ice cream… weeeell… maybe not.
So, Chiefs fans, do you have some Fantastic Feasts that you’d like to share?
