Hollywood Brown wants to be called “Hollywood” even though his name is technically Marquise. He received the nickname “Hollywood” from sportscaster Gus Johnson while he was at Oklahoma. Hollywood will be 27 years old this coming June 4th and was drafted in the first round by the Baltimore Ravens in 2019. Brown went to college at Oklahoma and Lincoln Riley was his coach in 2017 (Riley had just taken over from legend Bob Stoops) and Hollywood had back to back 1,000 yard seasons in 2017 and 2018. In 2017 Hollywood caught passes from Baker Mayfield and in 2018 he caught passes from Kyler Murray. Both QBs went on to win the Heisman Trophy.
Before going any further, Kingdom fans should know that Hollywood Brown is a cousin to Antonio Brown. Hollywood… once had 265 receiving yards in a game against Oklahoma State and he also came out in the draft after his Junior season. When Brown was drafted by the Ravens he was the first WR off the board. With the situation that Rashee Rice is in, the contributions of Brown this fall will be made even more critical.
Here’s one of my favorite plays of Hollywood Brown’s for a TD during the 2021 season:
Some may be aware that the Chiefs were entertaining RB J.K. Dobbins yesterday. While Dobbins was with the Chiefs Hollywood had a special message for Dobbins –> “Think Diamonds.” The only move the Chiefs made yesterday was to bring back RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Some fans are upset about this move but the reality is, CEH knows the offense and can be an excellent coach and player-trainer for who ever the Chief decide to bring in, draft, or sign.
Joshua Brosco, who write for Arrowhead Report, wrote a pice called, “KC Chiefs Earn Rave Review for Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown Signing from Pro Football Focus” in which he quotes Brad Spielberger of PFF and Spielberger gives the signing of Hollywood Brown an A+ rating. He projects a Fully Guaranteed contract at $12M (when I always thought it was tops at $11M) and he says:
“Darnell Mooney’s contract figured to be a great benchmark for Brown, with both players serving as great intermediate separators with solid deep speed — but also having missed time with minor injuries over the past two seasons. This is clearly Brown betting on himself with a one-year flier where if he balls out with Patrick Mahomes, he can sign a contract for a whole lot more. It’s a great idea for all parties. The rich get richer in Kansas City.”
Darnell Mooney got a three-year $39M deal from the Falcons with $26M Guaranteed. Now that Rashee Rice is in the Land of Flux (meaning, we don’t have any idea what his suspension will be, but it could be up to one whole year)… the contributions of Hollywood Brown become all the more important. Originally I thought Brown would be an upgrade over Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Rice would take the next step in getting better. Now, I think Rice will be out for at least part of the season and Hollywood Brown’s contributions will be depended upon heavily.
What is somewhat surprising is the time of signing Hollywood Brown. Many of us expected the Chiefs to sign a WR in the second or third stage of Free Agency, but certainly not this early. Certainly not by March 18th when the corralled Brown. Last offseason three players fell out of the first or second period of Free Agency and they were all defensive players: Drue Tranquill, Charles Omenihu and Mike Edwards. They helped make the Chiefs D into a Championship D and the rest is history, as they say.
Now, we’ll see what kind of chemistry Hollywood Brown and Patrick Mahomes have cooked up. Hollywood was with Mahomes the very week that he signed with the team and that is a very good sign. What many may not know is that as recently as 2022 Hollywood was involved in a high speed car case of his own:
“Brown was arrested in August 2022 when [AZ] state troopers clocked him driving 126 mph on Loop 101 (in the Phoenix area).”
Brown was fined $473. Enough said.
We can only hope Hollywood has learned his lesson (the hard way it seems). It’s just too bad he couldn’t have seen Rashee Rice’s trouble coming and headed it off at the pass.
