Chiefs Have the Greatest: Owner, GM, HC, QB, TE, Fans

Laddie Morse

2012 was not a great season for the Kansas City Chiefs nor the Philadelphia Eagles. The fact that the Eagles went 4-and-12 that year meant they would not be extending HC Andy Reid’s contract. When Clark Hunt flew to Philadelphia he signed Reid when three other NFL teams had planes there waiting to shuttle him to there cities. When Reid took over the CHiefs went from 2-and-14 in 2012 to 11-and-5 in 2013, which included 9 straight victories right out of the gate.

Owner, Clark Hunt

Hunt originally had the team structure set up so that the GM would have the HC answer to him but then changed that with both the GM and the HC reporting directly to him. I’m not so sure that this system would work with any other pair but then in late June of 2017, Hunt relieved GM Dorsey of his duties and two weeks late, in early July, Brett Veach was promoted to GM from his position of Co-Director of Player Personnel.

GM, Brett Veach

It’s been widely reported that Brett Veach, when serving as co-director of player personnel, brought Patrick Mahomes to the attention of then GM, John Dorsey and HC Andy Reid. In fact, what Veach said about Patrick Mahoems was, he’s “One of the best players I’ve ever seen.” Anti-Veach-ites won’t let us forget about Veach drafting such players as Breeland Speaks or Clyde-Edwards-Helaire, but the past two drafts would indicate Veach has learned from his drafting mishaps and offers — along with his band of talent evaluators — one of he best, or greatest, General Managers the NFL has ever seen. Chiefs Wire has a piece called, “Bold moves from Chiefs GM Brett Veach paid off with Super Bowl LIV victory” in which he quotes Veach as saying:

.

“People thought I was crazy back at the combine, before he took a start, when I said he is the best player I’ve ever seen. He is the best player in the game. I think that’s not just me saying it now, it’s the whole league. He is the best player in the game so whatever he does, it doesn’t really surprise you. He is that good. . .”

.

From the state Brett Veach grew up in, Delaware, comes this article by the delawareonline.com in which they say:

.

“Veach is the one who famously convinced head coach

Andy Reid to trade up to draft generational quarterback

Patrick Mahomes in the first round in 2017.”

.

In an article for ProFootballNetwork.com called: “Best Front Offices in the NFL 2023: Eagles, Chiefs, Bills Battle Atop Rankings” they ranked the Chiefs front office second best saying:

.

“Kansas City has won two Super Bowls in four years,

and the team’s future could hardly be any brighter

after Veach nailed his 2021 and 2022 draft classes,

landing immediate contributors like Creed Humphrey,

Nick Bolton, Trey Smith, Trent McDuffie, & Isiah Pacheco.”

..

HC, Andy Reid

Owner Clark Hunt has said:

.

“You have one of the greatest head coaches in the

history of the National Football League in Andy Reid.”

.

Hunt went on to say during the first ever “The Franchise” flick:

.

“Andy and his staff know what they’re doing

and if you guys will just listen to them and work

hard, you’re going to be successful.”

.

Andy Reid has not only led the Chiefs to two Super Bowl victories in the past four season, but over a five year span:

.

“Between February 27, 2018 and February 27, 2023,

the Kansas City Chiefs have the best record

by a [NFL] team, with a record of 64-18.”

.

The next best team record over a five year span… HAS TEN FEWER VICTORIES. –> New Orleans Saints = 54-28.

.

QB, Patrick Mahomes

While the combination of HC Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes means the Chiefs each year will be special, none of that could happen without Patrick Mahomes. In an article by Jordan Foote for SI.com called, “Patrick Mahomes: ‘Greater Appreciation’ for Winning Second Super Bowl” he says of Mahomes:

.

“… he owns the record for most total yards by a single player in one season, has a 50-touchdown campaign on his resume and has done no worse than hosting the AFC Championship Game in any season in which he’s been the full-time starter.”

.

The Mahomes magic has become commonplace for Chiefs Kingdom and any performance which is less than that is reason for Chiefs Fans to go off. Foote goes on to quote Mahomes showing his huan side:

.

“I thought the first Super Bowl was kind of like ‘Oh, this is amazing. We won the Super Bowl! You’re just like a little kid winning a prize at the fair. Whereas this one, you’ve dealt with failure. You understand how hard it is to get back on this stage and win this game. I’ve played a Super Bowl where I got blown out. I got all hyped up, then you go out there and you don’t do anything. Then I lose the AFC Championship Game in overtime when I thought we had a chance to win the Super Bowl that year. To have a full, brand-new team and have to go through the strain of being better and better every single day, it gives you a greater appreciation of winning this game.”

.

Patrick Mahomes has become an idol, hero, superstar, advertising mogul, father, son, brother, among other adjectives. He’s only 27 years old and has already won on his sports biggest stage… multiple times.

.

TE, Travis Kelce

Travis Kelce was ascending into his greatness before Patrick Mahomes ever came along. We all know about his seven (7) straight season with one-thousand yards receiving or more, but Kelce was performing at a high level prior to his hooking up with Mahomes. StatMuse.com says this about Kelce’s relationship with Alex Smith:

.

“Travis Kelce has 295 catches for 3,758 yards

and has scored 22 touchdowns in 62 games

with Alex Smith in his career.”

.

Yes, Kelce is 33 years old now (he’ll be 34 this coming October) and who knows how many years he has left in his gas tank. I’m not so sure it is a relevant question to ask if Travis Kelce is, or will be eventually, the best Tight End in the history of the NFL, but DraftKingsNation.com has an article called: “Is Travis Kelce the best tight end in NFL history?” an in that piece they say:

.

“Kelce has quite the resume he has built and is only 33 years old. You could make an argument that he is one of the best ever, but I don’t think he has quite reached the best of all-time. Tony Gonzalez still leads all tight ends in history with 270 games played and 15,127 yards with 111 touchdowns.”

.

The point is, the Chiefs currently have one of the best ever tight ends playing for them right now — Mr. Travis Kelce — and have had him there for the past nine years. By the way, before he started racking up 1,000 yard seasons he had 862 yards in his second season (really his first because of an injury) and 875 yards receiving in his third year.

.

Arrowhead Chiefs Fans

There’s really only one number that matter here and that’s: 142.2 decibels. That’s the record Chiefs fans set for the loudest stadium in the world in 2014.
