We’re more than a week into the Kansas City Chiefs training camp… the pads have already come on, then off again… and some patterns are beginning to show up. With the Chiefs first preseason game less than two weeks away now (on August the 13th) and the first game of the NFL season coming up next month, things are beginning to come together for these Super Bowl LVII champs.
.
.
On the first day of Training Camp WR Kadarius Toney went down with a meniscus injury and had surgery to repair that the very next morning. HC Andy Reid thinks there will be a way that KT is able to make it back by week one of the regular season but I have my doubts. In the meantime, the other WRs are taking advantage of his absence and makign plays which almost make you forget about his injury and absence.
.
.
While Training Camps allows teams the chance to focus on the aerial game, it is not suited for the running game of RBs for that matter.
.
.
For a rookie, Rashee Rice is having an excellent camp.
.
.
He came in in-shape and has dropped very few balls thrown his way. The most important aspect of his game is that he appears to have fashioned a relationship with QB Patrick Mahomes too.
.
.
.
.
Travis Kelce looks like he’s reverted to his old and immature ways by bringing “fighting” back to training camp.
.
.
Reid said of joint practices last year:
.
“You just don’t get a whole lot done in
joint practices. There’s always fights.”
.
Andy Reid also said recently, that fighting is a “waste of time” and I would agree.

Ever since the most recent Super Bowl, Andy Reid — as well as Travis Kelce — have been asked “When will you retire?” The sweet and clear answer is: it’s not on their agenda. In fact, Kelce stated:
.
“I’m gonna keep playing until the wheels fall off baby!”
.
With Kelce appearing to be interested in fighting as much as playing, my only hope is that he doesn’t retire to go the the WWE.

There are many Kingdom fans unhappy about the player the Chiefs signed this offseason to replace Orlando Brown Jr.. While it’s true that OBJr. has made the past 4 Pro Bowls and that Donovan Smith has made none… this site ranks the Chiefs fornt five OL as the thrid best in all of football. They go on to say:
.
“Donovan Smith allows them to keep career right tackle Jawaan Taylor on the right side. Smith allowed six sacks in 2022 in his worst season in the NFL, but he will only be 30 this season and could easily bounce back to a solid baseline.”
.
Although I don’t think Donovan Smith is — or will be — the best LT in the league, I think Orlando Brown Jr. has been far from that as well. He lands somewhere around the middle of the pack of Left Tackles in my book. DSmith should be better than OBJr..
.
.
Although I’m not suggesting that the Chiefs go into Super Bowl LVIII with backups… if that did happen this season, I’d be much more of the belief that K.C. could still win it all. Here’s what the Chiefs current backup OL looks like:
.
LT, Prince Tega Wanogho
LG Nick Allegretti
OC, Austin Reiter
RG, Darian Kinnard
RT, Lucas Niang
.
With these men operating as the primary backups this year, I’m much more confident in each of their abilities to step up and play like a starter. The one real weakness in this group is the backup OC: Austin Reiter. Since Reiter was the OC of record in the Chiefs Super Bowl loss to the Buccaneers, I think it’s appropriate to assume he’d be a weak link once again… if that were to come about… and knock on wood… I don’t think that is in the cards.
