Chiefs Headlines: 10•15•22

The Kansas City Chiefs are a team in progress. What does that mean? It means, General Manager Brett Veach is constantly turning over the roster. You may be wondering why he would do that, but the answer is simple in one respect: with all the injuries to players, he has to stay on top of player acquisition in order to meet the growing demand. So, let’s get to it!

When the Bill meet the Chiefs now, and this is true for the past three years now, it is the most major match-up in the Chiefs have in the AFC. In fact, this may be the most major match-up in all of the NFL, all teams considered. Can you think of another match-up that is bigger than Bills and Chiefs? Me either. Does that make this game a preview of the Super Bowl? No. Why? Because both teams are in the AFC. So, this match-up is a preview of the Lamar Hunt Trophy game. It’s hard to imagine any other teams will unseat one of these tow teams when it comes time to decide which of two teams will be representing the AFC in the Super Bowl.

Apparently, the 13 seconds game from last year, isn’t on the Bills player’s minds.

Yeah, right. When Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes go head to head, it becomes a match-up of great QBs reminiscent of Peyton Manning vs Tom Brady. We haven’t seen a QB battle as big as this one is, since those two QBs were in their prime and slinging it for their respective teams. That’s why this game will come down to… which team’s defense can slow down the other team’s QB just enough?

The Kansas City Chiefs have the number one scoring offense in the NFL. Right now. The Buffalo Bills have the number one scoring defense in the NFL. Right now. So, when the Chiefs have the ball in their hands, this game will be featuring the best versus the best, when it comes to scoring. Shannon Sharpe says of this game:

“The only reason I give the Chiefs a chance is because the greatness of Patrick Mahomes, but Buffalo has the better team with an exponentially better defense.”

Sportsnaut.com has the Bills defense ranked as the 2nd best defense in the league, overall. However, they have the Chiefs defense ranked at #9 overall, so this won’t be an easy-peasy game for Josh Allen either. However, sportsnaut.com ranks the Chiefs as the #2 offense in the NFL. The Bills? Sportsnaut.com has the Bills as the number one offense after 5 weeks.

Any way you look at it… this game has all the hallmarks of a memorable and immense match-up with the likely Home field advantage in the AFC on the line.

Although the Bills and the Chiefs offenses and defenses are top notch, their running games leave something to be desired. I don’t know if that’s just a sign of the times — because most NFL teams focus on their passing games so much — or if these two coaches just can’t pull the trigger on a good RB in the draft, and/or their systems don’t call for a good RB. While the Chiefs and the Bills both have a running game, neither teams acts as if it’s really a part of their offense. The Chiefs leading rusher is Clyde Edwards-Helaire and he ranks 36th among all league rushers. Devin Singletary is the Bills leading rusher and he ranks #45 among all league RBs. Is the Chiefs combination of CEH, Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon better than the Bills Devin Singletary, Zack Moss and James Cook? That’s a toss up. Or should I say, I’m about to “toss up my cookies.” Here’s James Cook scoring his 1st TD for the Bills, and it also just so happens to be their first TD by a RB this season (in Week 5, from last weekend vs the Steelers):

First, some good new. CB Trent McDuffie was back at practice this week. That being said, HC Andy Reid has also commented that he might hold McDuffie back until the 49ers game.

Also back at practice this week was PK Harrison Butker and in his case, he will definitely play vs the Bills.

While DT Tershawn Wharton will be moved to the IR list soon and will likely be done for the year because of his ACL left knee injury, the Chiefs brought up DT Taylor Stallworth to fill that gap in the lineup. Stallworth most likely will get rotational reps, but may not get as many in his first game on the 53.

K.C. also signed RB Wayne Gallman to the Practice squad. Gallman was a 4th round pick by the NY Giants in 2017 and has played in 61 NFL games. He’s 6-foot-0 and weighs 210, and his running style reminds me of Marcus Allen, especially the way he likes to jump over the pile at the goal line. K.C. could use a tall RB who can jump over the pile like that.

However, Gallman is likely just a place holder until RB/WR Jerrion Ealy can return from a 6-game suspension.

DE Benton Whitley was waived one day then brought back the next. DT Cortez Broughton on the PS had his contract terminated.

You may remember the movie called “The Minority Report” in which three siblings could tell the future and more pointedly, tell when a person was about to kill someone, thus, “Pre-Crime.” I’m calling what happened on Thursday Night Football a Pri-Crime because it was another example of the worst that NFL football has to offer when the 1-and-4 Washington Commanders beat (???) the 2-and-3 Chicago Bears 12-to-7 so that each team could end up with a hideous 2-and-4 record. That game (if you can even call it that) could only be seen on Amazon Prime, for a national audience. Jeff Bezos, the founder of the e-commerce giant Amazon, must be rolling over in this grave. Oh wait, he’s not dead? Well, he probably is after that game. Now, that’s a real Pri-Crime.

In what has become a negative, nagging and nascent national news story for the NFL, the call on Chris Jones vs the Raiders, when he grabbed the ball out of Derek Carr’s hand in last weekend’s game, has now become –> a travesty NFL owners can live with. It’s not just based on the refs call on CJ either, it involves Falcons DL Grady Jarrett.

Grady Jarrett, of the Falcons, was called for roughing the passer too when he clearly wasn’t roughing him up. Then again, it was against Tom “Be ever so gentle with me” Brady. BTW, Brady’s Net Worth is $250 Million (and he’s making $30M this year) so the $11,139 he was fined is a ______________ (you fill in the blank). I say it’s a downright, absolute, mockery of the NFL’s fining system.

Don’t expect the owners to lift a little finger to help a Defensive Lineman, like CJ or Grady Jarrett. They’re to busy kissing the ground that the league’s QBs walk on.
