“Help! I need somebody. Help!
Not just anybody. Help!
You know I need someone!
Help!”
The Kansas City Chiefs have that HELP this year in the form of DE Chris Jones. Jones, or Stone Cold as he’s also known as, has made a much ballyhooed move from DT to DE this offseason and yours truly, has been truly wrong that it would work. CJ had two sacks in last Sunday’s game versus the Browns and both were timely. Here’s both sacks in one clip:
Chris Jones first sack of Baker Mayfield came on the second to last play before the half. Watch for the setup of Mike Danna who lines up right next to CJ, plus Jarran Reed at NT who helps to set up this sack by Jones. They help to create a 1-on-1 situation so Jones can destroy their LT — #74 — by brushing his hands away and taking an inside track to Mayfield.
On the second sack, CJ is lined up on the opposite side from his first sack, and he has a great get-off. RT Conklin — #78 — barely touches Jones and the Browns can’t recover from being put in a 2nd and 17 hole.
When you think back about many of Chris Jones sacks, they’re usually very timely sacks. Of corse, no sacks is untimely, but in the case of Jones, his sacks have a direct effect on the outcome of the game.
Matt McMullen, the Chiefs beat reporter, revealed that:
The Chiefs pressured Baker Mayfield nine times yesterday [last Sunday], holding him to just 3-of-7 passing with an interception and two sacks on those plays. Chris Jones (3) and Mike Danna (2) tallied multiple pressures in the game.
So, the Chiefs had nine pressures and CJ had one-third of those. That’s helping his friends out –> life goes on, bra!

“Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends”
On Thursday evening, RGR Football YouTube Channel featured Seth Keysor, and host Ryan Tracy said, Jarran Reed was double-teamed 7 times versus the Browns. When you consider that Reed was only in on 40 snaps, being double-teamed 7 times is a lot. Perhaps that’s why Tracy also said, the addition of Frank Clark to the DE lineup would make a huge difference. By Clark taking some of the heat off of Reed, he’ll also be taking some of the pressure off of Chris Jones.
Knowing that the Ravens are starting LT Ronnie Stanley is out for this game on Sunday Night Football, the advantage is even better for the Chiefs DL.
Any advantage the defensive line gets moving forward, means Stone Cold will be even Stone Colder.

“There’s one for you, nineteen for me“
While Tyrann Mathieu goes by “The Landlord”… Jones could go by “The Taxman.” He’s that good. As a third year player, in 2018, CJ broke onto the national scene with 15.5 sacks, and has never looked back. In 2018 and 2019 combined, Chris Jones had a sack every 24.5 snaps, while DT Supreme, Aaron Donald, had a sack every 33 snaps (over he same time span). In 2020, Donald won that battle and it took him 64 snaps to produce one sack (on average, while Chris Jones produced a sack every 92.4 snaps.
Whatever you think of Chris Jones, you should consider him in the same league as Aaron Donald. While Aaron Donald was ranked as the 4th best player by all the other NFL players this year, Chris Jones was ranked 34th!?! An injustice in my eyes.
Aaron Donald has also been ranked as the #1 player in the NFL before, so it won’t surprise me if The Taxman — Stone Cold Chris Jones — breaks into the top ten this season.

“Nothing you can do that can’t be done”
Jones has one of the biggest personalties, not only in the Chiefs locker room, but in all of the National Football League. When he talks, people listen, and not just his teammates. From Pro Football Talk, here’s what he says about the last Super Bowl:
“I was very surprised. This is the Super Bowl. Usually you let the guys play, especially in the biggest game of the year. Penalties can change the game…. I mean, penalties cost the game either way. Only the referees can call the penalties. So the penalties affect the game 1,000 percent. What can I say? We had a lot of penalties called on us today.”
While “a 1,000%” may have been a bit of an over exaggeration, K.C. was called for 11 penalties — for 120 yards — while the Bucs were only penalized 4 times for 39 yards. Although Jones observation about the Super Bowl is clear, he didn’t have any sacks or QB Hits in that game. The Chiefs only sack came from Frank Clark who also had one QB Hit.

You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
While many a foe of the Kansas City Chiefs claim there is no dynasty, Chiefs Jones is part of the revolution that says, a dynasty, there is. Beyond that, Jones also has an appreciation for those who came before. Like Reggie White.
CJ called Reggie White, “the best player to ever play the game.” DE Bruce Smith hold the NFL record for the most sacks all-time with 200. Reggie White is 2 sacks behind Smith with 198. While Smith did it in 19 years, White accomplished his feat in 15 seasons. Although Stone Cold has 42.5 sacks in 5+ seasons, he’s got a long ways to go until he reaches the Smith/White stratosphere. At least Jones has an appreciation for exactly who Reggie White is.

Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces
Little darling, it feels like years since it’s been here
I’ve often wondered about the vast numbers of Hall of Fame players from the Chiefs 1969 squad and it’s made me wonder who would eventually make the Hall fo Fame from these teams playing for K.C., in this decade? We know Patrick Mahomes is headed there, eventually. Sure, Tyreek Hill… if he continues to produce… and Travis Kelce, if he continues to do the same. However, what about defensive players? According to Travis Kelce, CJ is going to the Hall of Fame. I also think Tyrann Mathieu could end up there… but GM Brett Veach needs to get him extended first.

Wait, wait a minute Mister Postman
Chris Jones will deliver. Is delivering. Has delivered.
While some Chiefs fans are singing, “Don’t Let Me Down,” to Chris Jones, he’s opting for “Come Together, right now, over me.” Why? Because he can, “Carry That Weight.”
