Chiefs: Hollywood Brown As Octopus

Laddie Morse

The Kansas City Chiefs signed Wide Receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and that could mean everything to the team. Specifically the Offense. Not since the team had Tyreek Hill has the offense had a weapon like him. However, not because Marquise “Hollywood” Brown has speed — which he does — but for a host of other reasons, which I’ll cover here today.

Since I’ve already mentioned speed, let start with that one. Brown runs a 4.33 – 40-yard dash and some site him as a 4.27 man. When K.C. decides to run a play that requires that they have a WR going deep, Hollywood Brown is that guy. That’s important because both RB Isiah Pacheco and second year man, Rashee Rice, should see lighter boxes and benefit greatly from Brown’s presence. Lighter boxes means the other team’s Safeties will have to honor the deep ball more, and run a two safeties deep coverage scheme more often and that will allow Rice and Pop — as well as Travis Kelce — time to cook and to get better production in the middle of the field.

Much of the comparison here is to MVS because, so far, that’s the major difference from 2023 to 2024:

MVS out, Hollywood Brown in.

Marquise Brown holds onto the ball at a much improved rate than Marquez Valdes-Scantling did. Here’s the data:

Marquise Brown has had four straight seasons of 100+ or more targets. He may not get 100 targets this year, but then again, he certainly could. MVS has been in the NFL for six season and never had a 100 targets season. Probably because he didn’t have a high enough catch rate:

Brown has had 165 First Downs Receiving in 5 years while MVS had 128 in 6 years.

Hollywood Brown has scored 28 TDs in 5 season in the NFL, or 5.6 per year. MVS has had 16 TDs in six seasons, or 2.6 per season.

Andy Reid will love working with a WR like Marquise Brown. Here he shows off his speed on a reverse and covers 29-yards so quickly, it doesn’t seem like he went that far (0:28):

Hollywood Brown runs an extension Route tree. “He has been a solid zone-beater throughout the course of his career and specializes in intermediate in-breaking routes.” -Matt Harmon

When looking at the 2023 roster, the Chiefs have made every move with the idea of getting better, and they have.
