Chiefs: I Can’t Believe That…

Chiefs: I Can’t Believe That… – I can’t believe that… the Kansas City Chiefs are going to the Super Bowl… but I do. I can’t believe Patrick Mahomes performance, again… but I do. I can’t believe the Chiefs have a great defense… but I do.

Sometimes in life, things happen that are so fantastic we say, “I can’t believe that” but in reality, we do believe it… or at least it takes some getting used to. Sunday was one of those days. So much so, that it left me in tears of joy. I know it’s a subjective process but, let’s take a look at perhaps the biggest “I can’t believe that” moments on Sunday.

The Chiefs held defense Derrick Henry to 69 yards rushing.

I must admit I was surprised that the K.C. front seven could shut the Titans behemoth RB Derrick Henry down and only allow him to gain 69 total yards and just 7 in the second half. What I’m also coming to realize as a result is that:

    • Frank Clark
    • Derrick Nnadi
    • Chris Jones
    • Tanoh Kpassagnon (more on him later)

… make up one of the best front fours in the NFL and it doesn’t hurt at all that DC Steve Spagnuolo has other super subs to rotate in like: Mike Pennel and Terrell Suggs plus, Xavier Williams, Khalen Saunders, and Demone Harris. However, the top 6 DL makeup a pack of wolves that will eat you alive, and then take your lunch.

Patrick Mahomes is not more widely considered the best QB in the game.

Monday’s debates across the waves was if Patrick Mahomes was a better QB than Lamar Jackson and it’s hard for me to see the LJ argument at all. Jackson is not in the playoffs right now, largely because of his own play. Now, after two early exits from the playoffs, Jackson has some leadership questions to answer. Some are claiming that Peyton Manning was a better QB in his era than that of Tom Brady because Brady played for a better team. Whatever. It has nothing to do with PMII or Lamar Jackson. The comments by Deion Sanders last night on his post game show that he didn’t agree that Mahomes is the best in the game right now, just make him look ridiculous. Chris Rose, his co-host, proposed that anyone who was starting a franchise right now would want Mahomes to be their first pick, but Sanders wouldn’t have it. So be it. Am I biased? Probably. It just doesn’t change the fact that Chris Rose is right.

Tanoh Kpassagnon is not getting more props.

KPass has progressed to the point that he should no longer be the kicking dog of Chiefs fans. Against the Titans he had 2 solo tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, 2 sacks and a Pass defensed. No, those are not incredible numbers but they’re very good numbers for a man that many have been touting as a bust. Some players require more time to develop. Some players require the right system to shine in. Some players need the right coaching. Do any of those apply to TK? How about all of the above. I certainly know Bob Sutton wasn’t doing him any good.

The Chiefs just put themselves in a position where they had to came back… AGAIN… from being down by ten (or more) points early in a game.

One of my growing concerns about this Kansas City Chiefs football team is their lack of focus or preparation or whatever it is, so that they don’t come out flat in the first quarter making so many mistakes and blunders. On one hand, the Chiefs have scored 51 to the Texans 7 points in their game… and they have scored 35 points to the Titans 14 in their game… to insure victories against each. However, they have also gotten behind a total of 34-to-nothing if you combine both games together. If . they do anything similar to that against the 49ers it’s hard for me to see them coming back to win.

On one hand, Mahomes has been on a tear since going down by 24 to the Texans: he’s completed 70% of his passes, has 9 TDs and has a 139.7 Passer rating in the past 7 quarters. Some say that means he’s never out of any game. I say, why get behind to begin with?

The Chiefs really went and traded up for Patrick Mahomes… and that he turned out this good.

When I think back to 33 months ago, in the 2017 NFL draft, when the Chiefs brass put their heads together to trade up from pick #27 to the 10th pick and select Patrick Mahomes… I’m still somewhat shocked. Not shocked that they id it. Shocked that it worked. I think that going 5 decades without a Super Bowl appearance will do that to you. Make you jaded to a degree. Yes, I’m still in shock that the Chiefs made it to the Super Bowl this year… and… equally shocked that they trade up to get their man and that that man worked out to eb perhaps one of the best quarterbacks in the history of the game. You now hear Patrick Mahomes name being mentioned in the same breath with Peyton Manning and Tom Brady and Brett Favre and Dan Marino… and the list goes on. At this point… all I can say is that I’m grateful.

The Chiefs were still picking up penalties in the Titans game, like they pick apples from trees.

The Chiefs had 9 penalties for 61 yards in this game vs the Titans. They only had 4 penalties for 37 yard against the Texans the previous week. When looking over the stats for the K.C. Chiefs in 2019 on Penalties, they are the only team in the league that had no Penalties for “Delay of Game.” Another reason to believe in Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs dropped from 137 penalties in 2018 to 107 in 2019. They were 1st in the NFl in 2018 and have dropped to 18th in 2019. Progress yes but if you average out the 2018 penalties it come to 8.6 Penalties per game… and their 9 penalties per game vs the Titans sits in that range instead of the 6.7 range in 2019.

The Lamar Hunt Trophy has taken so long to come home.

The past 20 years have been the hardest. The hardest to watch one Lamar Hunt Trophy after another go to teams like the Patriots. A team that I have so often felt was undeserving. Now that it’s home in Kansas City, it’s my great hope it will be joined by another trophy by another legend of the game.

Is there anyone else out there who has had an, “I can’t believe that” moment?
