I hear the “Talk”… but there is no “Walk” to it, yet. The Kansas City Chiefs have a long way to go to satisfy the Big Trophy seasons tallied up before we can truly say, the “Chiefs Dynasty” and mean it. However, let’s think about this: how many teams can align a decade of years — actually 9, until 2022 is in the books — and say they have accomplished as much? Only the New England Patriots and perhaps, trailing by a good number of accomplished seasons, the 49ers of the 1980s, the Pittsburgh Steelers of the late 1970s, and perhaps the Miami Dolphins of the early 1970s.
However, I don’t think the talk is totally “Passé!”
The Chiefs From 2013-2021
The Chiefs arose from the mat in 2013 and turned around a 2-14 season under GM Scott Pioli and HC Romeo Crennel, hiring HC Andy Reid and GM John Dorsey. 2013’s record was like manna from heaven.
The Chiefs finished and got into the playoffs to face the Colts. Clearly, I recall that the Chiefs might have won the game if the right sideline pass to Dwayne Bowe were 6 inches left, or if Bowe’s feet came down in bounds 6 inches to the left. It would have put the Chiefs in FG position to win the game. It wasn’t to be. That team started the season like blazes reeling off 9 straight wins before tapering off to finish 11-5. In preseason, they finished 2-2, but they beat both the Packers and Steelers. From the outset of the “Andy Reid Era,” the team could fire off wins and that, fired up the hearts of Chiefs Kingdom and Chiefs fans everywhere.
2014 Kansas City Chiefs
2014 was the season they cleaned New England’s clock. That was also when Sportswriters had a plethora of articles about Tom Brady being washed up. Since Andy Reid arrived in 2013, the Chiefs have achieved the playoffs each season, save one which was 2014 and they still had a winning 9-7 record.
From that point on, the Chiefs were playing great football.
2015 Kansas City Chiefs
We all thought this might be the turning point year. KC was 11-5 and faced the Texans and won a huge game for KC. In the Division round, they again faced the nemesis of the Brady-led Patriots. They lost a good game, 20-27. It is one reason that the youngster fans regard the Patriots as the dastardly enemy.
2016 Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs were 12-4 and faced first the Steelers in the playoffs. It was another heart-breaker as the Chiefs lost the game 16-18.
2017 Kansas City Chiefs
Clearly, this was Alex Smith’s finest season according to numbers. The Chiefs were 10-6 entering the playoffs, only to lose to the Titans, 22-21. That was a gut wrenching loss… again.
2018 Kansas City Chiefs
The season turned out to be ultimately another heart-break. The Chiefs played great football in the AFC championship game only to lose because Dee Ford’s penalty gave the Patriots the ball on a disqualified interception. Brady then led the Patriots to a tying field goal and the Patriots won the OT coin toss and Patrick Mahomes didn’t touch the ball, as the Pats scored the game-winning TD on their first possession of the penalty period.
2019 Kansas City Chiefs
What a great and memorable season for the 12-4 Chiefs. Again they were in the AFCCG and they won and finally captured the Hunt Trophy and they were going to the Super Bowl. Who can forget the comeback against the 49’ers and bringing the Lombardi home for the 2nd time.
2020 Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs achieved the goal of winning the Lamar Hunt Trophy and got to the Super Bowl only to be embarrassed 9-31 to the dastardly Tom Brady and the Buccaneers. K.C. did not score a TD in this game.
2021 Kansas City Chiefs
The record for K.C. in a down and up season was 13-5. They had no bye, won the Wild Card Round versus the Steelers, pulled off a 13-second miracle against the Bills. Then the Chiefs promptly overlooked the Bengals, who ultimately won the AFC Championship Game and the Lamar Hunt Trophy.
When All is Said and Done
For the 9 year period, 2013-2021, the Chiefs have figured into the picture of the top teams of the AFC. Plus,
- The Chiefs have been AFC West Champions from 2016-2021
- AFC Championships played: 2017-2021
- Super Bowl Appearances: 2019 & 2020
- NFL Football Champion: 2019 & the Lombardi Trophy
Andy Reid
Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chief’s Record: 145-103, 9-6 in the postseason (and prior to Reid, the Chiefs playoff record was 8-and-15). Few coaches achieve a .716 Winning Percentage, but that is what Reid has achieved with the Chiefs. Andy Reid’s Eagles Record: 224-130-1. His win percentage was .583. His postseason record was 19-10 and the Eagles reached the Super Bowl once, which they lost. Reid is also the first coach to ever win 100 games in both the NFC and AFC.
Andy Reid’s work with the GM’s, John Dorsey and Brett Veach, has been exemplary. Andy Reid, with the Chiefs, has accomplished more than any previous coach, bar none and he’s headed to the NFL Hall of Fame as a coach. How far he goes from this point is unknown, but perhaps he will get back to the Super Bowl several times before he hangs it up.
Brett Veach
Brett Veach has truly been a rare General Manager and is headed towards becoming a truly great GM. Brett Veach has worked the offseason as well as most GM’s I have ever followed. He has superseded most other GMs of the NFL. Time will educate us to how good he really is. Reid says Veach has a, “Relentless personality” which goes a long way towards making a great GM. Veach says, “Nothing is impossible” and the last offseason’s accomplishments are evidence of that.
Are the Chiefs a Dynasty Team?
Not yet. The records they have achieved since 2013 tell me they are on the cusp of it. A lot must happen to come anywhere near the idea that the Chiefs are a, dynasty team. This year, the Chiefs are not playing in February and should have. They didn’t have the fire and juice to beat the Bengals. That hurt. Something was missing from the 2021 Chiefs in a final analysis. We go from here and grow, get better, tougher, and more of a champion with the swagger. In 2021, the Chiefs captured it for a 6 game run, 2 playoff wins, but lost it when it counted most. I think it is obvious that the Reid-Veach tandem is working wonders. When we add in the other coaches, the staff has been top-notch. What remains to be accomplished has got to be up to how the roster is built and having the right people in the right place at the right time. In 2021, the team fell short. Onward and upward.
