Chiefs: KCO Speedwagon

Chiefs: KCO Speedwagon – There are teams in the National Football League that are fast, but nothing like the Kansas City Chiefs Offense. They say, “Speed Kills,” but please allow me to steal from Albus Dumbledore (J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter: The Deathly Hallows, Part Two”) for a moment:

“I’ve always prized myself on my ability to turn a phrase. Words are, in my not so humble opinion, our most inexhaustible source of magic. Capable of both inflicting injury, and remedying it. But I would, in this case, amend my original statement to this:”

“Speed Lves.”

Now that pretty much describes the new Kansas City Chiefs Offense: “Speed Brings to Life”… the unimaginable imaginings of one Andrew Walter Reid coming from heights of his castle tower at One Arrowhead Way. Years ago, Reid had said one of their goals each year was to improve “team speed” and that’s exactly what they’ve accomplished. Some have reasoned that the swift wide out Mecole Hardman was only drafted as a backup plan for if Tyreek Hill was lost to the team this year in the event his offseason mishaps turned into a suspension or even expulsion from the league. However, it’s likely they had Hardman on their list of players to draft high in the 2019 draft . because he’s not only fast but a very good receiver. However, let’s begin with the running back position:

RB Damien Williams

Last year’s original starter, Kareem Hunt runs a 4.62 – 40 yard dash but Williams runs a 4.45. While running back is not dependent upon speed alone, it certainly can have an impact on the edges and considering explosion up the middle. Yes, DWill has been out most of training camp and Andy Reid has changed his public statement about the Chiefs employing “running back by committee” because of Williams unavailability but, you can count on DWill be the main man at running back if he’s healthy come the 8th of September in Jacksonville.

WR Byron Pringle

I’ve been assuming that WR Byron Pringle was going to make the team since he had apparently made the 53 man roster last season. Now, I’m not so sure. He could lose his spot to another young WR coming up as the Chiefs have a plethora of talent at that position this year, more than they’ve ever had. If Brett Veach is able to pull off a trade, as I’ve been suggesting, trading a wideout to another team for talent in another area of need, it could bode well for Pringle, assuming he’s not the one who gets traded… which is not likely. It doesn’t hurt at all, that Pringle has 4.46 speed (in the 40 yard dash) as every move the Chiefs have made concerning their offense lately, has been to improve that aspect.

KR/RB/CB Tremon Smith

It’s still my belief that Smith will make the roster even though he’s seen as a liability at cornerback. His other abilities as a Kick Returner and a Running Back give him a versatility that Coach Reid and company treasure. It helps his cause a lot that he run a 4.3 – 40 yard dash and… can play several positions.

WR Mecole Hardman

Hardman looked like the real deal on Saturday evening in Arrowhead Stadium. His Jet Sweep catch and run to the end zone without being touched allowed fans to see his tremendous speed and decision making cutting through the right holes opened by the offensive line and Tight End, Blake Bell. Hardman’s presence on the offense will make defenses across the league nervous-er Nellie’s than they’ve already have been. Brett Veach drafting Hardman in the 2nd round, with the 56 pick, appears like it may be a steal fo a deal when all is said and done. You could also look at this like… Veach finding first round talent elsewhere… as he’s been able to do so often with other Chiefs players. Hardman’s 4.33 – 40 yard dash time gives the Chiefs another way to whip the opposition and stretch the field. Just what Patrick Mahomes needs… another dimension to an already Twilight Zone type offense.

WR Sammy Watkins

Sammy Watkins is a #1 WR on almost every other team in the NFL. His 6-foot-1, 211 lbs. frame along with 4.34 -40 yard dash speed is rare for a man his size. Pair him with Tyreek Hill and you have one of the best Wide Receiving combos in the league and certainly the fastest. Sammy is known for his YAC (yards after catch) and has a much better grasp of Reid’s playbook this year which has allowed him to play even faster. His ability to give Patrick Mahomes a viable target over the middle of the field will make it hard on opposing defenses to cover Hill long and Sammy short. His health is a wealth the Chiefs offense will use to expose other teams this year… and I can’t wait to watch!

Not that Watkins can’t go depp. He can, and that makes the Chiefs offense and even tougher cover. In the red zone, he gives Mahomes another big target and that should help once the Chiefs get close their year.

WR/PR Tyreek Hill

With Mecole Hardman in the house, Hill may take a lot fewer Punt Returns this year. However, his speed — and quickness — set him apart from all other WRs in the league and he will be used to return Punt as needed. You can bet Special teams Coach Dave Toub is not going to give up his prize talent that easily. When Hill lines up on offense, there are few who can keep up with him (although, I was glad to hear that Juan Thornhill is one of those who can). Although Hill was fourth in the league in receiving with 1,479 yards, he als ohad 151 rushing yards and an additional 21 yards in Punt Returns. His ability to manufacture yards on his own is unparalleled and he is the unquestioned leader of the KC Offensive Speedwagon.
