Chiefs: Lotta Open Grass

Laddie Morse

Seems like each offseason GM Brett Veach sets out to fix a certain position group, an important position, and he does exactly that. This offseason, it looks like he was set with the task of improving the WR position and making it faster. What Veach didn’t count on was that it would become the fastest position in the NFL, thanks to Xavier Worthy… and the Buffalo Bills of course (adding Hollywood Brown didn’t hurt either). The Bills traded their first round pick with the ChIefs so they could take Worthy. Gee, golly, they’re swell. With the addition of Worthy and Hollywood Brown, who will be back from his injury early in the season, the Chiefs will have a lotta open grass to explore this year.

Wide Receiver and kick returner, Nikko Remigio, has also given the Chiefs reason to think he’ll be exploring the open field of green this year too… if he makes the final 53 (0:24).

One more busted tackle and Nikko would be exploring that open green for K.C. and he could still be running. Good return as it was.

Hollywood Brown runs a 4.27 which is just a tick slower than 4.21. Having them both roaming the open range for Patrick Mahomes will make for a very elusive pairing (0:20).

When Xavier Worthy runs a deep route, even though it’s not the primary target of the QB, he opens things up for other WRs over the middle of the field. This is a great example of that.

That stutter-step at the beginning of Worthy route is lethal. It’s so quick you almost miss it… but the DB doesn’t and it opens up the lane for his deep route and eventual TD grab. BEVO STRONG… that’s funny. It’s a reference to the University of Texas’ live mascot named Bevo. My father went to UT so I know all about that tradition. Even funnier, I once thought the Texas jerseys were red like the Chiefs from watching them on black & white TV in the 50s and 60s. How wrong I was. I found that out when I lived in Texas — the Dallas area — and UT would play OU in the Red River rivalry.

With Justin Watson running a 4.44 40-yard dash and Hollywood running a 4.27 and Xavier running a 4.21, the Chiefs have made some major upgrades to their WR room. How could that be when Watson was already on the roster? well, dumping MVS, and signing Hollywood Brown then drafting Xavier Worthy and having Rashee Rice advance to his sophomore year in the bigs… means everyone in front of Watson got better and now he knows the offensive playbook even better so he’ll be able to fly without thinking about it.

Using Nikko Remigio on the cover of this piece is meant to point out that the Chiefs have gotten deeper than ever at the WR position. I have no idea if he’ll make the final cut, but if he doesn’t, then someone else who is even better will.

Montrell Washington – has had a great camp and offseason (0:13).

Justyn Ross – has had his best camp yet and with another year under his belt in Reid’s system is much better… even when he’s not getting the ball.

Mecole Hardman – knows the playbook backwards and forwards and is a veteran presence at this point.

Kadarius Toney – he appears to be headed out.

Phillip Brooks – a K. State alum who appears to be headed elsewhere.

Jaaron Hayek – had a good camp and is out of Villanova

Skyy Moore – had a solid camp, a 2nd round pick 2 years ago is likely headed for the 53 (0:40).

Cornell Powell – had a 64 yard TD catch in the game v the Lions. Was a 5th rounder three years ago.

While some of the lower wideouts are the same as they were last year, they’ve had a year to grow and the top of the WR room is much improved, especially the WRs that Patrick Mahomes will be throwing to mostly. That’s not to mention the Tight End room is improved too. Plus, RB Isiah Pacheco will be better than ever… which is a reference to the passing game.

Looks like it’s “Home, Home on the Range” for the Chiefs this year and everyone of their pass catchers will get to take advantage of the improvement at the top.
