Chiefs: Making Believers Out of Non-Believers

Chiefs: Making Believers Out of Non-Believers – Domination is not Believable! -The Kansas City Chiefs came within 4 inches of making it to the Super Bowl in 2018. They won the Super Bowl in the 2019 season, and won every playoff game by at least 11 plus points, including the Super Bowl. Now, a 14-and-2 record in 2020, easily could have been 15-and-1 (the last game of the year K.C. had no justifiable reason to play their starters). The Chiefs very well could have finished the regular season undefeated, if not for the Raiders loss, where the starters were in the game, yet they didn’t play 100%. That is three whole years of league domination, but we still see and hear national media personnel critiquing the Kansas City Chiefs as if they barely made it into the playoffs.

What is it Going to Take?

I’m happy that the Kansas City area media is very supportive of the Chiefs, we know! We Believe! The national media does not believe, they will real soon. Some headlines that I’ve found:

The Inevitability of the Kansas City Chiefs

The Fatal Flaw That Could Stop Each NFL Playoff Team From Reaching Super Bowl LV

Plus, Skip Bayless is critical of the Chiefs playoffs chances as well (big surprise!):

Rob Parker has criticism of the Kansas City Chiefs:

Colin Cowherd doesn’t trust the Chiefs Offense?

Of course, Cleveland sports radio says: the Browns have a formula against the Chiefs.

There are many more non-believer storylines floating around out on…

  • the internet
  • television broadcasts
  • radio talk shows

… so many, I can’t even show them all! Many of these people are just trying to gain viewers by creating controversy, and I’ve seen them speak positive about the Kansas City Chiefs one day, then negative the next day. As this week moves on there will be more so called experts speaking out against the Chiefs, with their bold takes. Most anyone can predict a big time dominant team to win, but the glory hounds go out on a limb to predict a loss by a prohibitive favorite.

Regular Season Success Against Playoff Teams

There are eight teams remaining in the playoffs, Kansas City played four of them in the 2020 regular season, with three games at the opponents stadium and they defeated all four of them. Here’s what the Chiefs offense did versus those playoff quality defenses. Stats were compiled from ProFootballReference.

  • 1,136 total yards allowed, 284 average per game
  • 759 passing yards allowed, 189.75 average per game
  • 377 rushing yards allowed, 94.25 average per game
  • Opponents season total yards produced rankings #2; #7; #12; #19
  • Opponents season passing yards produced rankings #2; #3; #19; #32
  • Opponents season rushing yards produced rankings #1; #6; #20; #28
  • Season yards per play rankings were #6; #7; #10; #11

Kansas City offense was ranked #3.

The Kansas City Chiefs Defense versus playoff quality offense:

  • 1937 total yards, averaging 484.25 per game
  • 1294 passing, 323.5 average per game
  • 643 rushing, 160.75 average per game
  • Those four teams finished the season ranked in total yards allowed #4, #6, #7, #14.
  • Season defensive passing yards allowed rankings were #5, #6,  #13, #21
  • Season defensive rushing yards allowed rankings were #1, #4, #8, #17
  • Opponents season defensive yards per play ranking #5, #6, #7, #12

The Kansas City defense finished the regular season ranked #20.

Quarterback rating by Patrick Mahomes in those 4 games was 118.6 The opponents were 73.1, 73.4, 96.1, 84.7

While these numbers seem mind boggling, what I’m trying to show is the level of the Chiefs upscale play against playoff quality teams. Admittedly, they play up to the level of good teams and down to the level of lower teams.

Jacob Harris wrote a piece for SI.com in which is called: The Chiefs Are So Good, They’re Almost Boring

The name of his piece would be funny, if it wasn’t true. Many media personnel have brought up the 7 games of close scores by the Chiefs in the latter part of the regular season, and then many have pointed out, sitting the starters in week 17, creates rust. They claim this is why the Chiefs will not win the Super Bowl, while comparing them to other teams in the past that simulated the same season ending results. So, let’s do a comparison to the positive side of revisional history.

The 2007 New York Giants, last 8 games of that year; they won 4, lost 4. They only won 1 time by more than 6 points, while the 4 losses were by 11, 25, 12, and 3. And by the way, those Giants sat their starters for week 17, while their opponents (New England Patriots played all their starters finishing the regular season 16-and-0). Then in the playoffs those same “rusty, not able to blow out teams on the scoreboard” New York Giants won three playoff games by scores of: 24-to-14, 21-to-17, and 23-to-20, enroute to also beating the still undefeated New England Patriots in the Super Bowl 17-to-14.

Furthermore Andy Reid’s record after a bye week, so 12 – 14 days between games, is 26 – 5

Negativity is a moot point, when the positives far outweigh the negatives!

My Quote of the Day:

The End Result

What we don’t see or hear from these same “experts” are some of the things I’ve written about:

  • the Chiefs ability to flip the switch
  • their mental toughness
  • what speed do
  • their unspoken motivation
  • or even what I have not written about

The Chiefs have endured this Covid-19 pandemic season better than any other team. My take on a majority of blow out games in the regular season — much like the 2007 Patriots did — makes your team soft and over confident. In the playoffs you are better off if you’re battle tested, which gives you the ability to know you can win, no matter what difficulties that you might face.

We have seen opponents this year attempt many different ways to beat the Chiefs, yet none truly worked:

  • two-deep zone (not)
  • three-deep zone (not)
  • rush 4, keep 7 defenders back covering the pass (not)
  • blitzing, as well as elaborate blitz schemes (not)
  • man-to-man pass coverage (most definitely not)

Run heavy offensively to control the clock and keep Patrick Mahomes off the field, did not work, nothing was 100% a reliable way to beat them. Every different way was countered by the Chiefs ability to make adjustments mid-game, much like they did during the 2019 playoff drive to winning a Super Bowl Championship.

The 2020 Playoffs

What the Kansas City Chiefs will show the rest of the NFL, is that their total team talent is unmatched. Whether it be team speed, physicality, finesse, chemistry, communication, motivation, mental toughness, or championship swagger. No other team will ever realistically feel that they have a chance to beat this year’s edition of the Chiefs. They all know that the Chiefs can come back from any deficit to win a game, and they know that Patrick will always find a way in a close game with pressure present, that he will find a way to produce a winning result. We have seen it all year long, teams play differently when they know that Kansas City has Patrick just waiting his turn to shine. They play scared and intimidated, which prohibits them from playing to their strengths, because their strengths will not be good enough.

The Conclusion: The Newest Dynasty

As with every dynasty that we’ve seen in the history of the NFL, we know that they all had a great Quarterback, who always produced a win when under pressure. The 60s Green Bay Packers and Bart Starr, the 70s Pittsburgh Steelers and Terry Bradshaw, the 80s San Francisco 49ers and Joe Montana, the 90s Dallas Cowboys and Troy Aikman, the 2000s New England Patriots and Tom Brady. With all of those team’s QBs, only Brady lost any Super Bowls. Now we will soon see Patrick Mahomes as the next great Quarterback. To lead a team to where only a few have gone. That is, producing a repeat Super Bowl Championship for the 2020 Kansas City Chiefs and becoming the next NFL Dynasty as we work into the 2020 decade. Maybe then they will… BELIEVE!
