Chiefs May 27: OTA Report

Once the Kansas City Chiefs completed their Organized Team Activities (OTAs) this week, Head Coach Andy Reid and three players addressed the media on Thursday afternoon, and they were asked a series of questions. We’ll take them topic by topic. You can watch that video here if you like. Topics/questions are listed first and answers are paraphrased.

Andy Reid Q&A

.

Patrick Mahomes – Reid was asked what QB Patrick Mahomes was able to do, or not do, in light of his offseason turf toe surgery. Reid said Mahomes was full go and did all the team activities. Reid also said Mahomes has done well. Mahomes, along with Travis Kelce, and several others, were not at day 3 of OTAs.

.

.

Mahomes was in Hawaii on Thursday to host his golf event.

.

.

Offensive Line – Reid said he has a good group now and that Brett Veach has done a “phenomenal” job of bringing in both young and veteran player to the group.

.

.

OTAs in Person – Reid said they all enjoyed having the players back and be able to teach them in person.

New players: Creed Humphrey, Nick Bolton and Noah Gray – Reid said they’re smart and physical and are “explosive.” He said they’re loading them… and they’re’ handling it well.

Orlando Brown – Reid indicated that having Brown there to get teaching from Andy Heck is a positive. He said there’s going to be a battle on the left. Long would have the most rust, but he’s done well and hasn’t shown any.

Anthony Hitchens – He’s the “grandfather” of the bunch. He’s a willing “studier” and has been great for the young guys. He was great with willie last year and is a confident player.

What have you learned about Orlando Brown and Joe Thuney? – They’re doing the same things in person that they did on tape, so you like that. But I like the person, the people.

Defensive Line – Jarran Reed I like, he plays right. Reid made a comment that Jarran Reed spells his name wrong trying to be funny. No one seemed to get it. That signing was a really good get and will pay of f this season. He’s a Pro Bowl caliber player. I’m excited to see him once we kick this thing off.

Tyrann Mathieu Q&A

.

How’s it going? –Mathieu said “It’s going good. Blessed.”

Deleted Tweet? – I wouldn’t put a lot of stock in that. Just focusing on coming to work and making those around me better.

More on deleted tweet [blah blah blah… ] – can work against you in this social media world we live in.

.

.

How is it with the young guys – you just hope they take the necessary steps to get better and be successful.

Have you talked to Bashaud Breeland – Breezy is on of the more underrated CB in the league. He’s helped us out a lot the last two years and deserves a lot of credit. He and I talk more than others. Try to just be a positive influence.

.

.

New Faces, what gets you excited – I think we could be better in the red zone. We were nearly last in every red zone stat so if we can make teams thrown the ball in the red zone it will help.

Tweets and extension deal – Negotiations process is tough on anybody. I’m fairly optimistic. I understand the business side. I have a lot of work that needs to be put in.

Hungrier this year? – Dig deeper and find new ways to get better. We feel like we have a lot of things we can do in helping each other and getting better.

Charles Woodson and switching numbers– it was the back end of Charles Woodson’s career and and some people say I’m getting old (he turned 29 two weeks ago), but I feel like I have a lot to give.

.

.

Orlando Brown Q&A

.

.

.

How’s it been going – It’s been going great. I just been a sponge and I’m trying to soak it all in. The coaches and players have taken me in.

On Coach Heck – Super easy to get along with and learn from. Learning Heck’s new techniques has been great.

What would your Dad think – I think he’d be happy that I’m playing for a Super Bowl caliber team but he’d just be happy that I’m playing in the league.

College to NFL & players come to you for advice – yeah, this is what we do for a living but you got to have fun with it. Everyone is all ears. Great OL room.

Why [did you choose] #57? – 57 gave me the opportunity to honor guys that had a tremendous affect on me: Jamal Brown and my dad who wore 77. Gave me the chance to represent those men.

Working with Joe Thuney and working in OTAs – get live time working with others and doing things LIVE, helps be a lot.

Nuances of working in a pass heavy scheme – understanding now I have to play a chess game and there’s a learning curve for sure. I’m going to do my best to keep Pat safe.

Best Part of Creed Humphrey and, playing with Chris Jones – Chris is an elite talent and player and I have a ton of respect for him and his game. I enjoy working and going against him. That’s something you don’t get unless you play here.

.

.

Creed is incredible. Creed is someone that was coming in as a freshman and I was a senior at OU, and he soaked everything up. He was a sponge, learned what he could. Learned the system fast. He’s very competitive and he loves football, and he’s physical. Those three things are definitely going to help him to be an elite level center in this league now. I definitely think he has Pro Bowl, All-Pro potential and this scheme is going to give him the opportunity to do it and he has the right mind set.

.

Anthony Hitchens Q&A

.

Mentoring the Younger guys, does it come naturally? – Guys helped me out when I came into the league. I’m just like an older brother and doing what comes naturally.

Hitchens said of Nick Bolton, “He’s not big on taking notes.”

Red Zone? – we were 32nd in the league in the red zone so we’re just working non that right now. That’s in the forefront of our minds. A lot of teams gt down there and run similar plays. Working to give up three and not seven.

.

Anything you want to change, a personal pride – just trying to get better. Not here to make an A-to-Z leap. Just working on details. If you get beat by a lineman, the plays over. Going back to square one and doing the basics.

How’s it feel to be in person – “You can’t practice football… Unless you practice football.” which Hitch said over again.

How was you offseason, you look leaner – yeah, I trying something different and be leaner. As camp comes I can bulk up and put more lifting in. With Tyreek Hill running down the field… And I’m in year 8, trying to “lean out” and watch my diet. Add the bulk when we add reps near the games.

How’s it (OTAs) going for you? – you only have had three days now. NO predictions. Third year in the system. Just trying to improve. Can’t hit, so we’re just trying to improve.

Other than physical Red zone, what can you do as a group – Spags put up three criteria, reasons for bad reps, 1) physical, 2) mental, 3) Spags scheme related and Spags put it on himself.

.

.

For our own coach to own up… we can take pride in that. We know, to get better, we have to work at it, and not wait until week one or week four. We have work to do and that started this week.
