Chiefs Meta Results: Who’s on First! – you know, to this day I still think the old Abbott and Costello act of “Who’s on First?” is still the funniest comedy routine ever.
Now, we need to know the same thing from the Kansas City Chiefs but like Costello asking Abbott, we’re getting nothing but gibberish from them on this count. Why? Whys in left… I mean, it’s the season of gibberish, that’s why. So, who do we turn to? Those who “think” they know… that’s who (I know, I know… “Whos on first”). That means, everyone, or at least anyone who has an opinion and a keyboard, which… seems to be everyone these days. So, let’s find out who is being projected to the Chiefs with the first round pick of the 2020 draft.
Here are the results of 28 Mock Drafts and who each selector has given to the Chiefs in the first round. Trades are also indicated, and although those are much more difficult to predict, I’m including them here:
By my count, 13 of a possible 28 Mocks are projecting a Cornerback to the Chiefs. The positional count goes like this:
The 5 LBs projected to the Chiefs were all the same LB: Zack Baun of Wisconsin. Who knows if that increases the possibilities that he will be the Chiefs pick, but at least it shows a number of fans are paying attention to the Chiefs greatest needs. While there were 13 CBs projected to K.C., those included 5 different CB prospects: AJ Terrell, Jaylon Johnson, Noah Igbinoghene, Damon Arnette, and Jeff Gladney. I’d be most happy with Jeff Gladney out of this group, I also think he’ll be gone before the Chiefs pick.
It’s hard to understand anyone projecting a RB to the Chiefs at #32. I get that some are wanting the Chiefs offense to expand even more. I’ve even said it would be great to have them select a RB in this draft, but I’m backing off the idea that they should take any RB in this draft at pick #32… no matter who that RB is.
I’m even more miffed with the idea that the Chiefs would take an Edge rusher at #32. Unless that player is 6-foot-5 and at least 290 lbs. then he doesn’t fit the Spagnuolo blueprint for a DE or a DL does he? While I recognize that size alone doesn’t make the player, in this case, with the Chiefs shedding both Justin Houston and Dee Ford a year ago, then turning around and bringing in an Edge rusher, seems like a step backwards.
Both KCBudMan and Walter Football have predicted a trade backwards from pick #32 and that would be my first choice for that pick as well. In a scenario where a QB — like Jalen Hurt, Jake Fromm, or Jacob Eason — has not been taken in the first round prior to the Chiefs picking, they might easily barter a trade to allow another team to jump back into the first round and get a very good QB prospect… allowing that team to tie up a QB for a 5th year option, down the line. That could net a very good extra pick in the top 100, which is what is needed more than picking a player out of BPA order, a situation Veach may be faced with if he remains at #32.
Veach moved on a RB yesterday by signing 5-8, 210 lbs. RB DeAndre Washington. Another good pre-draft move. That won’t stop the Chiefs from signing a RB in this draft, but it does seem to indicate they won’t be going RB early. This could also mean the end of the line for RB Darwin Thompson who proved his diminutive size was more of a challenge than we thought it would, especially when it comes to protecting the franchise jewel: Patrick Mahomes II.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again (Iknow, I stole that from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off)… Veach is doing all he can do to narrow the needs of the roster, prior to the draft. That way, he can go BPA to his heart’s content. However, as of now, the Chiefs still need a couple of Corners and a knockout LB.
What do you think of all these Mocks and their picks?
