Chiefs: Mock Chalk Talk

Chiefs: Mock Chalk Talk – This will be the first of seven Sunday afternoon “Mock Chalk Talks” — from now until April 25, the Sunday before the draft — in which we’ll offer Chiefs fans the opportunity to post their own mock… then we’ll all talk about it. Maybe we’ll even learn something from each other. Today, I’ll begin by posting a Mock from David Bell.

David says: I have been trying to get this with TE Brevin [Jordan] and also ensure that I get [Daviyon] Nixon, an OT, [Jabril] Cox… I like Watkins to fit our need as possession receiver, Hufanga is an under the radar Safety. Dalman is a late fit for an OC but is one of those football IQ type players. Perkins rates fairly high though he is down on my list so, that is the reason he is a later round choice. I am very pleased with picks 1 – 3. Nixon is an impact player from the Inside, Jenkins a top OT fit. Selecting Cox, is one of my top 2 OLBs. I get… OL all the way round, but see Jenkins as a quick, to get ready, starting OT.

David’s first draft was a Trade Backwards Mock so he could pick up other top 100 picks. I think there’s a better chance of Veach doing that than trading up. Here’s David’s second Mock:

This is another simple trade back. David’s comments about this one:

Contrast this example with the second, same objective only this time I cannot get Nixon and must wait for opportunity to get a DT on my personal list. I think Brevin Jordan gives the Chiefs exactly what we need as the #2 TE with a high ceiling so in the second case, I took him in round 2. I then miss Cox but I like McGrone a lot too. Ojulari had to be my DE choice. As my last pick the undervalued ILB McDuffie was mock fodder.

David and I have spent a lot of time talking about an upgrade along the Defensive Line and what an impact player their could mean to Frank Clark, Chris Jones and whoever ends up manning the DE position opposite Clark. The value of a third impact player on the DL, specifically at DT, as opposed to getting an impact guy at DE, would mean the world to Clark and keep him from being double-teamed so much. While we’d each love to see an OT taken early, the depth at OT is much better then it is at DT in this draft, consequently, Daviyon Nixon has been a frequent flyer mock target.

Sometimes, the impact DTs are gone by pick #31 and with Gregory Rousseau still on the board, he’d be a great pick and should be able to provide a similar elevation in play along the DL as NIxon. OC Humphrey may be the best OC for K.C. by then, if he falls that far, and I like Adrian Ealy a lot, but he may have to wait to become a starter. Consequently, it would seem that Veach would need to have his starting OTs in place prior to the draft for things to fall this way.

It’s worth noting that this draft class, like several before, is deep in both WRs and CBs. That means, Veach can get a guy his scouts have targeted later in the draft and he can focus on his top three priorities: OL, DL and LB in the early rounds.

Here’s my second mock offering, which was done just yesterday. This is a multiple trade-back mock leading to eleven pick overall and while sometimes things fall almost exactly the way you’d like them to, this is one of those times… or mocks:

The top four players in this mock could end up becoming day one starters if things fell this way. Jenkins is 6-6, 320 and seems to fit the Chiefs needs, scheme wise. The Draft Network says of Jenkins:

A quick setter that’s prone to take horizontal pass sets, he’s created a habit of establishing quick wins by striking his hands and controlling defenders. As a run blocker, he’s able to create considerable amounts of movement when able to gain momentum prior to engagement points. A well above average finisher, Jenkins is the type of offensive lineman that attempts to humiliate players in the opposite color jersey.

While some may not see him as an immediate starter, he should get there in short order. Even if he is able to get starters reps, enough mocks have landed this way to make me think, Veach will have all his starters set along the OL prior to the draft.

Here’s a mock from Alan Haupt. Thank you Alan! He obviously did some trading backwards and forwards in this one, and that’s how he was able to come up with 5 Top 100 selections.

Alan makes a great point when he says: “Free agency is going to wildly change all teams needs which affects all picks.” We’ll surely keep Alan’s insight in mind as “Mock Chalk Talk” progresses in the coming weeks leading up to the draft.
