Chiefs Muddle Their Way
Past the Broncos
by Laddie Morse
The Kansas City Chiefs did just enough to win by one TD, 30-to-23, to keep from losing to the Denver Broncos… as opposed to winning going away as Chiefs fans have become accustomed to. Watching the Chiefs muddle their way past the Broncos was not unexpected as they spent their last two games under the bright lights of Sunday Night Football.
If I told you before the game that opposing QB Case Keenum would throw for 262 yards and the Broncos would run for 189 yards and… that Denver would win the time of possession battle 32:41 to 27:19 and… that the Broncos defense would hold Tyreek Hill to three catches and hold Kareem Hunt to 50 yards rushing… you’d likely have thought the Chiefs lost.
That’s because the Chiefs have so many weapons now that QB Patrick Mahomes takes advantage of, that it doesn’t matter if one or two guys have a down day… the others will pick up the slack.
Here are some of the highlights that led to another Chiefs victory that has their record blossoming to 7-and-1:
- WR Sammy Watkins showed up in a big way with 8 receptions for 107 yards and 2 TD.
- TE Travis Kelce remains the Broncos Killer with 6 receptions for 79 yards and a TD.
- OLB Dee Ford had 3 sacks, pressured Case Keenum all day, including a strip-sack for a fumble.
- DL Breeland Speaks recovered a fumble created by Dee Ford.
- CB Kendall Fuller had a crucial 2nd half INT.
- DL Chris Jones had a timely 3rd down sack.
- Rookie LB Dorian O’Daniel had 4 tackles and a key tackle for a loss.
- RB Kareem Hunt had another superb and memorable run which saw him leap over one defender and carry another defender all the way for a TD.

Of course the player of the game was QB Patrick Mahomes, again. He’s having such a great season that most everyone you talk to says he’s leading the discussion on who should be Player of the Year in the NFL, so far. Mahomes threw for over 300 yards again with a total of 303. He had 4 TDs and one INT on 24-of-34 throws which works out to a 70.5% completion percentage. Here’s one of his TDs passes to Sammy Watkins:

Patrick Mahomes is reaching some historic levels of achievement as well:

The Chiefs defense gave up 411 yards but did a good job on third downs again stopping the Broncos on 8 out of 12 third down opportunities. It’s a good sign when you can win games when you’re not playing your best. It’s called winning ugly. That’s the best way to describe this game for a good portion of the Chief performance.
With 26 total TDs for the season, Patrick Mahomes now has thrown as many TDs as the Chiefs threw in the whole season of 2017. As far as MVP talk, check out this graphic and notice the asterisk:

Now I’m beginning to see why Brett Veach said this of Patrick Mahomes before the season began:
“We had a plan for Patrick and that was to come in, to learn the offense and not go out there and play until you have a firm mental grasp of what you want to accomplish. All of the physical tools are there. He’s one of the best players I’ve ever seen.“
