Chiefs: Nobody Would Have

Nobody Would have — Anticipated

That Patrick Mahomes would so successfully engineer and lead the teams offense to score an average of 40 PPG over 3 contests. We all would have said that he would be successful. With the schedule leaning so heavily to the opponent side of the ledger, nobody would have predicted that the Chiefs would be 3-0.

Nobody would have predicted that the offense would be such a successful machine nor break out each game and drive for a score — something the Chiefs have failed to do in prior years. The Chiefs first possession(s) have been a wonder to behold.

No one would have known, or would have believed Patrick Mahomes would throw 13 TDs in 3 games and set two major NFL records while doing so. PMII has used as many as 9 different receivers in maneuvering the team to move the chains and score. If there is a drawback to what has occurred, it’s that the Chiefs scored too quickly and longer drivers were not necessary.

The affect of this is that the defense hit the field too quickly.

I don’t think that anybody would have expected the QB ratings for Mahomes each week, or would have thought that his accuracy in getting the ball to receivers would be so high.

I am pretty darned sure that nobody would have anticipated that PMII would get through 3 games against opponents and not throw at least one interception. He has thrown Zero. Nada. None.

A Wart for Another Day

I think the fans should be extremely proud of the Chiefs offense. There have been drops and misses and the Chiefs still scored. If there is a true drawback to what the offense has accomplished, it is the 2nd half of the 3rd game. The offense only managed 3 points after scoring 35 in the first half. This disturbs me. I have my view of what happened and it involves the HC and playcalling but I am not going to worry that wart here.

Tyreek Hill

I am positive everyone expected big things from Tyreek Hill. I am not sure that they would have anticipated some of Hill’s shockingly magnificent catches that have taken place in each game.

Travis Kelce

Kelce has quietly done what you expect a top NFL tight end to do. In the game versus the 49ers he went up, reached with one hand and pulled in a pass to the right sideline. It was a magnificent catch. Wondrous. Impossible. The thing about the rest of his contributions has been that he has helped move the chains, score TDs, block well and been one of the most troublesome possession receivers in the NFL.

Sammy Watkins

A lot of fans questioned the sanity of Brett Veach signing Sammy to such a large deal. I was not one of those fans. What I see is that the Chiefs have two top receivers to wreak havoc on opposing defenses and this has proven true especially in the 2nd and 3rd contests. Watkins has shown us what he can do and he has caught passes wide open, or contested and he makes the catch and gets YAC in a lot of cases. No matter what you may have been thinking you must by now be anticipating the rest of the season wit Watkins being a major threat.

Chris Conley

One thing you can say about Conley is that he runs crisp routes and when Mahomes had to scramble, Conley got to the hole he was coached to get to  and PMII made a wonderful side arm strike to Chris in the end zone — result? TD.

Demarcus Robinson

Robinson is fast and in one huge case, Robinson had a go up the seem and was 10 yards free. He was ready and able to catch a wide open pass — PMII over threw him by 4 or 5 yards. The point? Robinson gets separation. I like him as our #4 WR.

Mr. Hunt, Mr. Williams and Mr. Ware

The running game has not been much of a part of the Chiefs playcalling. What I did like was that these three RBs got their licks in either as receivers or with Hunt closing out the Steeler game and all three being involved in the 49ers contest.

For Cryin’ Out Loud

The defense? I don’t even want to dig into it. My 3 previous articles delved into what was wrong and we got to the point where I was thinking after the first half of the 49ers game was in the book that the defense had turned a corner. The second half proved me wrong — or at least it proved that Bob Sutton sucks as a DC. I am not sure about this but I think Sutton backed off in the second half and the result as the 49ers got the game momentum. When Garoppolo went out on a stupid move by a QB in an upright position and ended his season in one moment of glaring idiocy, JG probably knocked the 49ers season from the catbird seat to the toilet seat. About all I can say is that the momentum loss was the end of the 49ers run.

Watching the Steelers in the second half and their losing 17 straight points to the Bucs reminded me of defenses and momentum. I can say that it was good for the Steelers to get to 1-1-1, but their game showed the glaring inadequacy of the defense — the same confounding this for the Chiefs and very similar in appearance. I threw up my hands several times for the turn around in the Chiefs game. Uttered words I cannot put in this article and since I have always liked the Steelers, I felt for them the same frustration as I do the Chiefs.

They say that in September games, head coaches figure out what they have and what they need. September is about a done deal. Next Monday versus the dastardly Bronco’s will tell the tale. I am sure we have the ability to outscore the Broncos and win the game with offense.

Nobody could possibly have thought our defense would be this bad. Andy Reid and Bob Sutton better figure something out — FAST! Mona????
