Has The Chiefs Offense Gotten Better Or Worse?

The Kansas City Chiefs had a showdown against the Redskins on Monday

Night Football. The Chiefs were down by 10 after a disastrous first quarter. In the second quarter the Kansas City Chiefs threw a touchdown pass to Travis Kelce and brought the game to 7-10 at the half. In the third and fourth quarter there was an exchange of multiple field goals and the Redskins also punched in a TD. In the end The Chiefs kicked a field goal to secure the win.

The Chiefs had troubles in the first quarter of play.

The first two drives were not good at all for the Chiefs. Luckily my TV saved me from suffering and blacked out the whole first quarter.

In the first two drives the Chiefs passed for 43 yards and completed 3 out of 7 passes. The rushing game wasn’t any better with 5 yards rushing on 3 attempts.

Both drives resulted in punts.

After the game I thought to myself, “Is our offense going downhill?” I was also thinking that this would make a great article so, I decided to make a comparison of the Redskins/Chiefs game, to our previous games.

Kansas City at New England

The Chiefs started out fairly strong by completing 7 out of 8 passes for 66 yards and a TD. The rushing was also strong with 24 yards on 4 attempts and a fumble (we forgive Kareem because of his performance later in the game).

Conclusion: The Chiefs came out ready to play and displayed that by driving down the field looking like they couldn’t be stopped. And because of their dominance they picked up an early 7 points.

Philadelphia at Kansas City

Kareem Hunt and Tyreek Hill collectively ran for 13 yards on 4 rushes in the first two drives. While our run game wasn’t the greatest our pass game came out strong, Alex Smith completed 6 out of 10 passes for a whopping 96 yards.

Conclusion: The Chiefs struggled to get the run game established early but made it up by having a strong passing game. Since they couldn’t get a strong run offense going they walked away with 3 points instead of 7.

Kansas City at Los Angeles
The Chiefs were granted with great field position on their first two drives because of interceptions. They took up these opportunities by scoring on both drives. RB Kareem Hunt showed up against the Chargers and ran for 22 yards on 3 rushes, Alex Smith also ran for 4 yards. Smith also came to play because he threw 4 for 4 and also picked up 2 passing TD’s.

Conclusion: The Chiefs dominated early but to be fair, 2 of our 3 TD’s came early from those 2 interceptions. We didn’t score again till late in the game when Kareem Hunt ran a 69 yard TD rush. In my opinion we didn’t dominate like we should have the rest of the game.

After looking through the past games it seems to be that the Chiefs have been a hit or miss team in the beginning of the game. In my opinion our best first two drives were against New England.

The Chiefs did fumble on their first play but on our second drive we owned the Patriots — the Super Bowl champs — in the run and pass game. We also did this in an away game in Boston.

The Chiefs need to touch on how they play at the start of a game. If we keep on playing the start of games like we did against Washington it will come to bite us in the butt and maybe even cost a playoff game or maybe even a Super Bowl (knock on wood).

“Anatomy of a Touchdown” will air on Saturday.
