Like any other Chiefs fan at ArrowheadOne, I dream dreams about K.C. signing sensational Free Agents like WR Julio Jones, but for the vet minimum — I know, dream on — and offseasons where they completely rewrite the book on their offensive line — oh wait, I must be living that dream — then signing and drafting defensive players who can put the clamps on opposing offense’s… and dreaming of having the best quarterback in the league and selecting a RB in the first round… and… and… oh, take me to that place, take me to that magic kingdom, The Chiefs Kingdom. Go with me now…. oh, the places we’ll go! And… are going!

Breez on Down, Breez on Down,
the Road…
So CB Bashaud Breeland has signed with the Minnesota Vikings, huh? There are those in the Kingdom who are worried at the “loss” of Breeland to the cornerback group. I’m not one of them. Breeland penned his own thanks to those in K.C.:
.
.
.
While he was with the Chiefs the past two seasons, out of 32 possible games, he was suspended for 4, played in 27, had 86 tackles, 4 INTs, 17 PDs (passes defended), 1 FF (forced fumble(, and 3 fumble recoveries. That’s 3.1 tackles per game and 1 PD every 0.6 games. That last one is not very good plus he had 20 penalties (10 in 2019 and 10 in 2020) while in K.C. for 221 yards lost.
.
Although Breeland was another body, he wasn’t anywhere near the Pro Bowl level player someone like L’Jarius Sneed has the potential to be. With the corners the Chiefs already have in house, they should be fine, even if an injury strikes down one of their starters. Here’s there CB crew for now: L’Jarius Sneed, Rashad Fenton, Charvarius Wards, Mike Hughes, BoPete Keyes, Deandre Baker, Chris Lammons and others. It’s important to remember that the Chiefs have players at the Safety position who can, and do, step up and play the CB role, whether that outside, or in the slot. With Tyrann Mathieu and Juan Thornhill both excellent at stepping into those roles, it relieves a ton of pressure on the CBs. With L’Jarius Sneed being able to step back and pla ythe Saety role at will, it gives DC Steve Spagnuolo may different looks he can throw at an offense.

In the meantime, Breeland isn’t even guaranteed a starting job in Minnesota and will compete with Cameron Dantzler for that honor.

The Red Herring That Is and Isn’t
If you’re not familiar with the “Red Herring” idea, it means: something that distracts you from what is important. What’s important here is, Malik Herring (now dressed in red), a UDFA defensive end is making some noise, without even stepping on the field, yet. A week ago, I penned a piece on Herring called, “Chiefs UDFA Focus on DE Malik Herring” but he looks to have a promising future, once he’s completely rehabbed his knee, which suffered an ACL injury in the Senior Bowl earlier this year.
.
At 6-foot-3 and weighing in at 280 lbs., he’s the same height and 20 pounds heavier than Frank Clark by comparison. I’m not saying that he’ll ever be a “Frank Clark” level talent, but he played opposite Azeez Ojulari at Georgia, who was taken in the 2nd round by the NY Giants, and Herring should have some upside.
.
Ronald Kopp Jr. at ArrowheadPride has an excellent piece on Herring called: “UDFA defensive lineman Malik Herring shows lots of promise for 2022” in which he says,
.
“Without his injury, he was talented enough to have been drafted. A former four-star recruit, he played in at least five games during all of his four seasons at Georgia. Remember his name for 2022 — when he should be ready to compete to be part of the defensive line’s rotation.”
.
That seems to be the consensus on Herring: “He’ll be ready in 2022.” Matt Connor at ArrowheadAddict says Herring is a prime suspect for the IR, and Charles Goldman at ChiefsWire says the same. In any event, 2021 will be his Red Shirt — or Red Herring — season. Down the road, he’s someone to watch.

AFC: Threat or Space Cadets?
Most of us believe the Kansas City Chiefs will make it back to the Super Bowl for a third year in a row. That begs the question: who will be their main competition this year? Following is a breakdown of the teams in the AFC and the level of threat they impose. The Threats are symbols meant to show the number of legitimate talents that team has. The Cadets symbols represents the total number of Space Cadets associated with that team and which take away from their ever possibly being a real threat to the Chiefs in 2021. All are on a scale of 1-to-5, with 5 representing the greatest threat.

K.C. Mandela-ed the Offseason
I don’t know if you saw this but it sure did remind me of the Brett Veach and Andy Reid when it comes to learning something from the Super Bowl they lost… and then took the appropriate actions this offseason.
.
.
After decades of watching the Chiefs fail and then fail again… it’s refreshing to see them take the necessary steps to correcting a major failing once they reached the pinnacle of the sport. Under this way of thinking… the Chiefs have never lost… they’ve won by learning… and they’ve shown us that they learned, by completely revamping the offensive line, a line that was the major reason for their SB LV loss. What a difference the right leadership can make.
