Chiefs: Oh, What a Week It Was! ArrowheadOne Writer’s Reactions To Mahomes New Contract – Not since the first week of February have Chiefs fans been this excited. The reason? Patrick Mahomes new half-a-billion dollar contract of course! Other news popped up this week as well, so let’s get to it. Before we get to the AO writer’s reactions, let’s review his new agreement.
Patrick Mahomes GINORMOUS Deal!
On Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs restructured a contract for their — once in a lifetime — quarterback and made him the highest paid player in the game… ANY GAME… EVER!
I’d go as far as to say that Mahomes newly restructured contract, which the Chiefs signed Patrick Mahomes to… has dramatically changed the way others are living their lives and dreaming their dreams:
Mahomes said he was called on the 4th of July, two days before we all found out, and told that the basics had been agreed to and an announcement was forthcoming. Chiefs fans everywhere celebrate not only his deal, but the fact that their Chiefs have tied up the best player at the most important position in the most popular American sport going. Congratulations to not only Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs but to Chiefs fans across the globe. Yes, we do have Chiefs fans in Austria, Germany, and China too.

I’ll fully admit my immediate reaction was unsafe. I was driving (a fully loaded semi tractor trailer) when my wife (the Eagles fan) texted me the news. My first reaction was a “holy sh*t” text back to her, followed up by my very unsafely continuing to drive while finding the ESPN article and posting it everywhere I could. My emotions were pure joy and gratitude for both Pat and the Chiefs organization, especially after digging further into the details/numbers of the deal, because this had been exactly what I had been hoping for. I also felt a strong “why should I have expected anything less?” emotion toward Veach and his team. He continues to pull rabbits out of hats, and this was a big one. These guys, while working so well with Pat’s agents, somehow found a way to give Pat the most exorbitant contract in North American sports history, while simultaneously making him look completely unselfish! Pat got his, the Chiefs got theirs … and in all likelihood Chiefs Kingdom gets the dynasty we’ve been cautiously crossing our fingers for.

“That’s a winner, folks!” Those words, oft-uttered by the late St. Louis and Hall-of Fame broadcaster Jack Buck were the first that came to my mind when I heard that the Kansas City Chiefs and Super Bowl LIV MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes had agreed to a deal that keeps our hero in a Red and Gold uniform for the next 12 years. Everybody wins. Patrick Mahomes wins because, well, a half a billion dollars. The Chiefs win because, well, Patrick Mahomes. The NFL wins because they have as their face now, the best athlete our nation has known since, perhaps, Jim Thorpe. He’s a humble team-player, unafraid to lend his voice to social causes that he believes in. The NFL could scarce find a better ‘poster child’ for the league. The biggest winner, though, will be our country. Mahomes is passionate about giving back to the community and supporting the causes and charities that he believes in, be it with his fame or his money. His 15 and the Mahomies Foundation is but one example. Expect much more in the future, using both his newfound wealth and his newfound fame. Yes, Chiefs fans, that’s a winner!

I will always remember where I was around two in the afternoon on the sixth day of July 2020. Working from home out of our spare bedroom, I saw the push notification on Twitter. I started double and triple checking sources to make sure it was real, I just couldn’t believe it. I ran down stairs to make sure my wife knew, texted friends and relatives, anyone I could think of. I didn’t even know the numbers yet. Rumors coming in that it’s north of $400 million which made me even more excited. Patrick Mahomes and our beloved Kansas City Chiefs are making history! At that point I didn’t care if it was $750 million, I was just excited to have locked down the best player in the sport for 12 more years. I’m writing this three days later and I honestly still can’t believe it. Once I really started digging into the details of the deal I almost seemed to believe it less. I mean, it’s the largest sports contract ever signed and it’s actually team-friendly?!? Mahomes obviously loves it here and I love having him here, and I’m really excited to watch this dynasty unfold before my very eyes.

As media, and as fans, we just have a hard time believing in what we hear or we just don’t truly listen to what’s being said. We instead jump to our own judgements. These Mahomes contract terms were predicted accurately by everyone connected with the negotiation teams, both Mahomes side and Chiefs Team side. Mahomes has repeatedly said that he wanted to be in KC for his entire career, and that he did not want to cap strap the team with his contract. Back in February, Skyler Carlin wrote a piece for Clutch Points called, “Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes’ Agent Has Strong Message Ahead of Extension Talks” and quoted Matt Verderame, who interviewed Mahomes agent, Leigh Steinberg, saying, “Quarterback greatness is judged by Super Bowls.” Matt pointed out in that article that Mahomes management team stated that they realize that it is important to make sure that Mahomes’ extension doesn’t negatively affect Kansas City’s roster. From K.C. Chiefs side, Brett Veach has never hid his intentions. He stated last year that he was setting up the salary cap in anticipation and long range planning to re-sign Mahomes to this long term contract. In fact, the Chiefs Management Team’s long term association with Mahomes’ Management team, was established before they drafted him. So, as fans, and as media… when will we truly trust, we say it, and we believe it: IN VEACH WE TRUST!

Our very own ‘homegrown’ franchise Quarterback. It’s really amazing, especially in the Super Bowl era, how few quarterbacks were drafted by and became that teams franchise QB. Only about half of the current 32 NFL teams have ever drafted their own franchise QB. There are a lucky few that have drafted more than one, the Miami Dolphins with Bob Griese and Dan Marino, the Dallas Cowboys with Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman, the Pittsburgh Steelers with Terry Bradshaw and Ben Roethlisberger, the Green Bay Packers with Bart Starr and Aaron Rodgers and the Indianapolis Colts with Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck. There have been other QB’s over the years that have put their teams on the map during their careers, including: Joe Namath, Joe Montana, Jim Kelly, Tom Brady and Russell Wilson, to name a few, but until the 2017 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs were not one of those teams. After waiting for decades for our team to draft a QB worthy of the Kingdom, not only did our favorite team draft “a” franchise QB, they drafted “the” franchise QB. After proving himself as the ultimate NFL QB, our very own, homegrown, Patrick Mahomes II was rewarded with a contract that will have him playing in Arrowhead until my youngest Grandson is old enough to buy me some beer! Hallelujah!!

I must confess, it’s hard to see past the pandemic right now. With the NFL season in doubt — and with that doubt growing by the day — it’s difficult to traverse the landscape of Mahomes new deal. That being said, Monday was a river of refreshing water in the desert of an offseason. Just as the draft brought us the exhilaration of newly added talent to the roster, Patrick Mahomes’ restructured deal adding ten years to his existing deal, was a dream come true for fans of the Chiefs… especially an old foggy like myself. Seeing that the organization was committed to locking up the best Chiefs quarterback since Lenny Dawson, was a real gift! Go Chiefs!

“Patrick Mahomes’ contract extension is the first piece of good luck Jones has had on the contract front. For the next two years, Mahomes has reasonable cap hits. Brett Veach now has 5 more days to negotiate a deal and the cap space to get it done. Even so, K.C. will require a flexible contract structure, and a frustrated Jones might not be willing to cave. We will find out soon as July 15th… which is the deadline for an extension.”
From Ransom’s piece, “Star-Crossed Lovers: Chiefs Unlucky in Quest to Keep Chris Jones” posted here at AO on Saturday.
